ADVISORY BOARD ON AGING
Meeting Summary
March 15, 2016
PRESENT: Mary Altpeter, Alex Castro, Peggy Cohn, Keith Cook, Dan Daniel, Ed Flowers, Donna
Prather, Dick White
Excused: Teri Driscoll, Lorenzo Mejia, Yvonne Mendenhall
The meeting was held at the Seymour Center. The February minutes were approved following
the motion made by Dick White and the second by Ed Flowers.
Alex Castro distributed a draft of the letter to the CH Transportation Connectivity Board
addressing safety improvements needed in the Seymour Center area and will accept comments
through next Tuesday.
Director’s Report
• Re-naming of the Central Orange Senior Center to the Jerry M. Passmore Center Report
from the North Carolina Association on Aging Conference - Yvette Missri won the Rising
Star award
• Won the American Society on Aging 2016 Award for Excellence in Multicultural Aging
• State Alzheimer’s Plan released on March 8
• Human Services Departments’ Informatics projects – Food Insecurities/Transportation
• TJCOG Annual Monitoring visit – April 6-7
• UNC School of Public Health Pitch for a Capstone Team to work on 2017-22 Master
Aging Plan
• Orange County Government Expo – University Place – April 8
Janice Tyler stated that the OC Cares Project was mentioned in the State Alzheimer’s Plan. She
outlined the Food Insecurities and Transportation initiatives of the Human Services
Departments of Health, DSS, Housing and Aging Informatics project. Information will be shared
with OCRA. She stated that the UNC Capstone team assignments will be announced April 1.
She concluded by announcing that both the Seymour generator and outside storage shed have
been scheduled for delivery.
New Business
• Board Orientation – April 5, 10 a.m.
• Outside Agency Funding Applications Review – March 16 or 17
• UNC School of Public Health Capstone Team board presentation – April 18
The Board Orientation date for members Daniel, Driscoll and Mendenhall was confirmed.
Board members were recruited to review the outside agency funding applications. All Advisory
Board members were invited to the current Capstone Team luncheon presentation on April 18
at Carol Woods.
Continuing Projects
• 2016-17 Budget
• Bill Thomas’ Age of Disruption Tour – April 21
Ms. Tyler gave an update on the Bill Thomas’ Age Of Disruption Tour being held at the Friday
Center on April 21. She encouraged the Advisory Board to attend and also to let her know if
she needed to purchase their tickets.
Master Aging Plan Updates
• Project EngAGE and Senior Resource Teams Update
• Dying with Dignity Forum – March 17, 4-7 p.m. Friday Center
• Community Volunteer Recruitment Fair – April 13, 4-6 p.m. Seymour Center
In the MAP update Keith Cook asked that flyers promoting the April 13 Volunteer Fair be sent to
the churches. The S.A.L.T. Project has 16 volunteers serving 166 residents. Peggy Cohn asked
about how all of Project EngAGE activities are being tracked.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.

Committee Progress Reports:
Report of: Orange County Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee
Date: March 10, 2016
The OCNHCAC had a meeting on March 1, 2016.
We met our new Ombudsman, Inas Al-Rawas and her training Ombudsman, Carolyn
Pennington.
We approved site visit reports from Signature of Chapel Hill and Brookshire.
We reorganized with officers for the next year. They are as follows: Teri Driscoll, Chair; Vibeke
Tally, Vice-Chair; and, Sandy Nash, Secretary.
All 1st Quarter Site Visit s are to be completed by March 31, 2016. Still awaiting reports from
Carolna Pointe and Carol Woods which will be discussed at our May meeting.
I attended the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Feb. 9, 2016 along with other Board
Chairs and we reviewed the Annual Reports of all of the Volunteer Committees.
Triangle J is sponsoring a Seminar “Dementia Beyond Disease” on March 23, 2016 from 8 am-
4:30 pm at the Millenium Hotel in Durham, NC. Many of our members will be attending.
We have two vacancies on our committee.
We do not have a meeting in April. Our next meeting will be on May 3, 2016 at 5:30 pm at the
Seymour Center.
