HomeMy WebLinkAboutAging Board minutes 011409 1 ORANGE COUNTY ADVISORY BOARD ON AGING Minutes January 14, 2009 PRESENT: Peggy Cohn, Alice Gordon, Steve Lackey, Haryo Marsosudiro, Fred Schroeder, Jan Wassel EXCUSED: Jerry Kruter, Ellen Ozier, Thelma Perkins, Leo Allison STAFF: Bob Jones, Kathie Kearns, Jerry Passmore The meeting was called to order at the new Central Orange Senior Center by Chairman Steve Lackey. Following introductions Jerry Passmore announced that the grand opening festivities for the new Central Orange Senior Center will be held on Thursday, January 29. This event, cosponsored by the Department on Aging and the Board of County Commissioners, will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:00am. Board of County Commissioners Chair Valerie Foushee will serve as the Master of Ceremonies and guest speakers will include NC Division of Aging Director Dennis Streets. Board members suggested removing the ‘senior center’ sign on Highway 70 that directs drivers to the former location and placing banners at the Meadowlands entrance and above the front door of the new senior center. Mr. Passmore stated that, in addition to placing temporary signs, he will ask the Friends of the Central Orange Senior Center volunteers to help direct traffic and assist with parking. The minutes of the December 10 Board meeting were approved upon the motion offered by Peggy Cohn and the second by Fred Schroeder. The Chair asked for a motion to accept the preliminary MAP Annual Report for Year 2007-08 and Priorities for 2009 as reviewed at the December meeting. Fred Schroeder asked if , in light of the current economic downturn, there were parts of this plan that were more controversial than others. Mr. Passmore responded that none of the priorities would require additional Orange County financial support except for food service improvement priority. Jan Wassel recommended that these priorities would continue to be implemented even if there is a budget reduction. Mr. Passmore replied that the budget reduction for FY 2010 is currently projected to be 10%. He speculated that proposed budget figures will be presented to the Advisory Board at its February and March meeting. Jerry Passmore announced that the next meeting of the Food Service Innovation will be held on January 22 at the Seymour Center. At this meeting the Committee will consider the timetable for including meal provision to the meals-on-wheels programs in Orange County. Peggy Cohn asked about the efforts to establish a ‘green’ kitchen operation. 2 Mr. Passmore noted that the plans include using dishes and utensils instead of disposable supplies. Jan Wassel referred to a university model project of similar design that she will make available. Jerry Passmore announced that Ann Johnson has called a meeting of the Legislative Workgroup for February 9. A report of this activity will be made at the February 11 Advisory Board meeting. The Orange County Legislative Forum, Chaired by Commissioner Alice Gordon, will be held at the Seymour Center on February 23. A summary of the new Nursing Home and Adult Care Home star rating system was distributed. Regional Ombudsman Jill Passmore played a major role in the system development and will be invited to attend the February Advisory Board meeting to answer questions about the rating system. Adult Care Home Committee Chair Peggy Cohn gave a brief explanation of the difference between the two types of homes and the rating systems that are used for each. Also mentioned was the growing interest in establishing a teaching nursing home facility in Orange County in conjunction with the UNC Program on Aging. Mr. Passmore announced that the Adult Day Health Program hoped to move into its new space at the Central Orange Senior Center within the next week. The plans will allow the program to move while only being closed for three days. In Thelma Perkins absence, Chairman Lackey stated that the Friends of the Seymour Center Board is continuing to standardize its process for reviewing requests for funding of programs and activities. Haryo Marsosudiro reported on behalf of the Friends of the Central Orange Senior Center that plans are underway for the February 13 Las Vegas Night fundraiser. He listed the large items at the new Senior Center that have been purchased by the Friends organization. Jan Wassel suggested inviting corporate representatives to visit the new facility in hopes of soliciting on-going financial. Jerry Passmore informed the Board that an Orange County Facility Use Committee Meeting was scheduled for Friday, January 16. The policies being developed will impact all County facilities, including the two senior centers. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned and Board members were invited to tour the new Central Orange Senior Center. Respectfully submitted, Jerry M. Passmore Secretary
