HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES-2018-005 Resolution acknowledging Spay Neuter DayRES-20 i 8-0l05 WHEREAS, cats, and dolgis provide companionship to and share the homes of thousands, of individuals, in Orange CO d WHEREAS, the prob�ern of pet overpopulation costs the taxpayers of Orange County i hundreds of thousands, of doflars annually through aniimal controll and sheltering programs, aimed at coping, with unwanted and hlomeless cats and dolgsi; and TTMEREAS, humane societies and shelters throughout the country have to euthanize approximately four million cats and dogs each year, afthough many of them are hea�lthy I i and a:dop�t�able�, due to the lack of crcal resources suich as money, space, and good adoptive homes; and WHEREAS, the Animal Services Advisory Board and the Animal' Services, Departme have made correcting ple,t overpopulation a plriority, and prepared Managing P Overpopulation: A Strategic Plan for Orange County and Maniag�ing Free-Roatniinjo Cats in Orange County Nolrth Carollina; and WHEREAS, spayingil and neutering cats and dogs, annong other anirnall companions, has been shown to d�rastically reduce overpOpitflation,' and' WHEREAS, Animal' Services has partnered with community partners, in&jding AnimialKind, the Department of Socia�l Services, and Splay Neuter Assistant Program- North Carolina to offer "low cost"' and "no cost" spay and neuter to households who are I economically disadvantaged or who receive pulbli,c assistance; and WHEREAS, veterinarians, anirnall care and colntrol organizations,, national and loc:a�l animal welfare orgia�nizations, and private citizeni,s have Joined together again this year tol advocate and supiport the spaying and neuitering of companion animals, on "Spay Day USA 2iO 18" ; Now, therefore be it RESOLVED by Orange County that February 27, 2018 is declar "Spay Neuter Day", and the Board of County Commissioners call's upon; the peolp�e I the County to observe thle day by having their own; cats ♦ dogs spayed oir neutered by sponsoring the spaying oir neutering of anoither person's cat or dog, I
