The OCAC Advisory Board reviewed the list of current applicants as of the last board meeting on Monday, January
8, 2018. Of the applications on file as of that date, the board recommends the appointment of Frederick Joiner
(Position #13). Mr. Joiner is a writer, a former gallery owner in Washington, D.C., and a lifelong advocate of the
arts. His knowledge is timely considering the transition of the OCAC, and his input will be invaluable as we move
forward with new initiatives.
If Mr. Joiner is approved, this will fill our last vacant space on the OCAC Advisory Board.

I have been working as a writer and artist for almost 15 years, during that time I also worked as
an IT professional serving artists and arts organizations with strategic information technology
guidance and support.
In addition to holding a Master s of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, I have also taken online classes
in Curatorial Studies at the Node Center in Berlin, Germany. As a curator of the literary, visual
and interdisciplinary arts, I have administered and curated a wide range of public programming
for various organizations including Smithsonian, Belfast Exposed (Northern Ireland), Medina
Galerie (Bamako, Mali), Honfleur Gallery, Hillyer Artspace, the Phillips Collection, the American
Poetry Museum and others.
I currently or have in the past served on the Board of Directors for Arch Development
Corporation, American Poetry Museum, and I continue to act in an advisory role for individual
artists and arts organization.
I have also served on grant review panels for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities
and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
My interest in serving on the Arts Commission is first to learn more about the arts community in
Orange County. Since I have moved here, though I have been frequenting many different kinds
of arts events, I feel that I have only been scratching the surface of the breadth of offerings here.
Since returning to the United States and moving to Orange County, I have been interested in
finding ways to get involved and to use my skills and ideas be an active part of building the kind

of art community I would like to live in; as I have done in my former neighborhood in
Washington, DC. I believe that serving with Arts Commission will provide that opportunity.

After receiving my masters in social work, I was employed with United Way of Central Maryland
where I was responsible for reviewing funding applications from non - profit organizations. I am
also familiar with the grant process while working or volunteering for other non - profit
organizations like Associated Catholic Charities, Carrie Murray Outdoor Education Center, and
various community mental health centers. I left the field of social work to earn my Masters in
Professional Writing degree at Carnegie Mellon University. I was hired by the School of
Computer Science to further develop their Distance Education Program to Masters -level
software engineers. I launch joint professional workshops.
The past seven years I ve worked primarily as a writer and photography, turning an avocation
into a vocation and have become active in the arts community in the Triangle Area.

The arts community will be facing a difficult four years under this new administration and I d like
