BACKGROUND: The Annual Community Dinner has been a living demonstration of community ideals for the past 20 years. The event builds community spirit, crossing economic, racial, religious and ethnic barriers. Co-chaired by Mildred Council (Mama Dip), the event received national recognition in 2014 as a winner of a National League of Cities Award for Cultural Diversity. The Orange County Department of Housing, Human Rights and Community Development provides support for this event where attendees sit side-by-side to enjoy culturally diverse food and entertainment provided by the local community. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goal is applicable to this item: • GOAL: FOSTER A COMMUNITY CULTURE THAT REJECTS OPPRESSION AND INEQUITY The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race or color; religious or philosophical beliefs; sex, gender or sexual orientation; national origin or ethnic background; age; military service; disability; and familial, residential or economic status. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the Proclamation Recognizing the Annual Community Dinner and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. 2 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING THE ANNUAL COMMUNITY DINNER WHEREAS, the Annual Community Dinner is an event to build community spirit, crossing economic, racial, religious and ethnic barriers; and WHEREAS, the attendees sit side-by-side to experience and enjoy culturally diverse food and entertainment from the local community; and WHEREAS, this is the 20th Annual Community Dinner co-chaired by Mildred Council (Mama Dip) and Nerys Levy, coordinated with a diverse Community Dinner Committee; and WHEREAS, the first fiscal agent was Preservation Chapel Hill and for the past 10- years the event has been held with the support of the Orange County Department of Housing, Human Rights and Community Development; and WHEREAS, the Community Dinner received national recognition in 2014 as a winner of a National League of Cities Award for Cultural Diversity, as nominated by the Town of Carrboro; NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners does hereby recognize the Community Dinner as an exemplary display of community ideals and a highly appreciated asset for the residents of Orange County.
