ADVISORY BOARD ON AGING
Minutes
June 13, 2017

The meeting was called to order by Chair Peggy Cohn. Approval of the May 9 meeting was
postponed due to lack of a quorum. Heather Altman updated the Board on the current status
of the Carolina Villages organization. Mary Altpeter suggested that this topic be placed on the
September agenda for further discussion. She also asked that such ideas be noted at the end of
each month's minutes to assure follow-up.
Directors Report
Janice Tyler gave a summary of her recent MAP presentations made in Guilford County, at
Lynchburg College and to the Chapel Hill Town Council. Discussion followed on tracking
instances and value of such presentations.
Yvette Missri reviewed the Commodity Supplemental Food Program recently made available in
Orange County. The Department on Aging and Orange Congregations in Mission are the two
distribution agencies enrolled to date. She summarized eligibility requirements for the 400-600
potential recipients and the items available in the first month's distribution.
Ms. Tyler announced that the design for the Passmore Center renovations has been finalized
and construction will begin in September. The Housing Expo held at the Seymour Center on
May 20 had 200 people in attendance.
Both Ms. Tyler and Ms. Missri attended the Economics of Aging Symposium recently held at the
UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. Another session is being planned for October.
The bilingual social work position is being re-posted due to lack of suitable applicants. Almost
40 applications have been referred from Human Resources for the position vacated by Corina
Riley's retirement. Senior Care continues to recruit for a new Executive Director. Ms. Tyler
concluded by announcing that Shenae McPherson has been hired as the permanent part-time
Volunteer Connect 55+ Program Assistant.
Old Business
The Board of County Commissioners will review the Department's budget request for FY 17-18
at their meeting tonight. Adoption of the Orange County budget is scheduled for June 20.
New Business
Mary Fraser announced that a breakfast for representatives of the faith community will be held
on June 29 at the UNC Hospital— Hillsborough Campus. With the help of the pastoral
counseling summer intern the Project EngAGE Faith Based Senior Resource Team will develop
strategies for information dissemination to the faith community. The availability of commodity
food boxes will also be promoted at this event.
Janice Tyler stated that she concluded her presentation to the Chapel Hill Town Council by
announcing that all Chapel Hill Transit drivers will be completing Dementia Friendly Business
training. She encouraged the Town elected officials to seek designation as a Dementia Friendly
community. Ms. Fraser added that the DFB post-training surveys have documented that the
course has been very useful and should be repeated for new staff.
2017-22 Master Aging Plan
Agency leaders are being asked to sign commitment letters to continue working on the issues
identified during the MAP planning process. Mary Fraser reviewed the meeting schedule for
the workgroups and the Steering Committee. The Advisory Board will hold a work session on
July 11 to review its assigned tasks. Ms. Fraser also announced the work assignments for the
MAP summer interns.
Continuing Projects
Candidates for Project EngAGE Class Four are now being recruited. The course will held
September 14 through December 14. The Department on Aging is currently hosting a regional
training for 35 professionals who work with clients with dementia and intellectual or
developmental disabilities.
Committee Progress Reports
Yvonne Mendenhall reported on the success of the recent Long Term Care Workers Awards and
reviewed the selection process. She also spoke about the Smiles Surprise Project which is a
part of the Adult Care Home Committee visits. Volunteers such as the Memory Café clients and
kindergarten students put the gift bags together. The Chair inquired how more information
about the facilities can be included in the Committee's visit reports.
Janice Tyler noted that the Friends of the Seymour Center organization is actively recruiting
new Board members.
