PURPOSE: To consider a resolution recognizing Orange Congregations in Mission (OCIM) for
25 years of service to the community,
BACKGROUND: In early 1981, three pastors gathered for a lectionary study of Biblical texts.
Out of these meetings arose discussions about the human needs of Orange County and how to
support those needs through the united efforts of local congregations. This was the beginning
of OCIM. Twenty-five years later, thousands of individuals and families, during times of
personal crisis, have received support from OCIM. In 2005 alone, Orange Congregations in
Mission assisted 4,432 individuals, of those, 1,787 were children. OCIM provides emergency
food, clothes, utility payments, and shelter to those in crisis, The Meals on Wheels program
served over 11,000 meals in 2005, With the support of over 45 diverse congregations, OCIM
celebrates 25 years of service to Orange County.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: NONE
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the attached
resolution recognizing 25 years of service by Orange Congregations in Mission, and authorize
the Chair to sign.

RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE ORANGE CONGREGATIONS IN MISSION
FOR 25 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY
WHEREAS, Orange Congregations in Mission is celebrating 25 years ofservice to northern
Orange County and the surrounding communities; and
WHEREAS, OCIM works with the volunteer support of over 45 diverse congregations to
minister to the urgent needs of citizens to enhance self-sufficiency; and
WHEREAS, OCIM works through references from the Orange County Department of Social
Services, pastors of member congregations, Orange County Health Department,
American Red Cross, Orange County Schools, Orange County Sheriff's
Department, and Hillsborough Police Deparment; and
WHEREAS, through the Samaritan Relief Ministry, OCIM has helped meet the emergency
needs of those who find themselves in a crisis situation by providing food, clothes,
utility payments, and/or' shelter; alyd
WHEREAS, in 2005 OCIM, through its Samaritan Relief Ministry, assisted 4,432 individuals
and family members during their time of need with financial uld spiritual support
and of those, 1,787 were children; and
WHEREAS, through the Meals on Wheels program, OCIM has provided food for the elderly
and homebound, serving over 11,000 meals in 2005; and
WHEREAS, the OCIM Thrift Shop offers recycling at a personal level by providing clothing
and household items for those on a low budget; and
WHEREAS, Orange County has received first hand observations of the positive impact of
OCIM services from Orange County Govermnent employees who volunteered time
and energy in support of OCIM programs, especially with Meals on Wheels
delivering food;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners do
hereby acknowledge the significant support and service to community members in
need provided by Orange Congregations in Mission over the past 25 years to make
Orange County a wonderful and compassionate place to live..

Orange Congregations In Missions (OCIM) begins its 25th year of'service to the
citizens of northern Orange County, Over the yeazs, OCIM, through its
Samaritan Relief program has provided thousands of northem Orange County
citizens with financial assistance. It has also provided food from its food pantry
and through its Meals on Wheels program, These accomplishments were made
working through Orange County Department of Social Services and with the
support of ow 47 congregations.
We aze celebrating our 25 years of service at an ecumenical worship service on
May 8, 2006 at St, Matthew's Episcopal Chwch in Hillsborough, NC. Our
speaker is the Reverend Michael Curry, Episcopal Bishop of North Carolina,
We would very much like for you to participate with us in the celebration of'this
event by providing a resolufion or special letter commemorating this event,
