Proclamation II, "Official for a Day" Agenda INFORMATION CONTACT: Sharron Hinton, 245-2300 PURPOSE: To proclaim the week of April 23-29, 2006 as Orange County Government Week and endorse the "Official for a Day" activities,. BACKGROUND: The National Association of Counties and the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners encourage local governments to celebrate County Government Week in an effort to educate citizens about county government, A proclamation to acknowledge the week of April 23 -29, 2006 as Orange County Government Week is provided as Attachment I. This year marks the sixteenth year that Orange County has celebrated County Government Week by sponsoring the "Official for a Day" Program. Due to scheduling conflicts, this year's program will take place on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 - prior to the actual national recognition, On this day students from the area high schools are partnered with department heads and management staff during the morning to gain an understanding of county government operations, After the mentoring, a mock board of county commissioners' meeting is held whereupon students address issues often presented to the Board, This exercise provides them with an overview of the legislative process. An agenda for the day is provided as Attachment II, FINANCIAL IMPACT: None RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopts the proclamation and endorses the planned event. a PROCLAMATION Orange County Government Week April 23-29, 2006 WHEREAS, America's counties provide a variety of essential services that protect our communities; and WHEREAS, Counties protect residents from natural disasters, terrorist attacks, crime and drug abuse; and WHEREAS, Counties are the first to respond to emergency situations and are primarily responsible far planning for disasters; and WHEREAS, Counties work to protect families, children and youth; the elderly and disabled; and WHEREAS, Counties provide services that make America's communities stronger, safer places to live and raise families; and WHEREAS, Counties protect our communities, keep families healthy, help troubled youth, train laid-ofF workers and perform countless other jobs; and WHEREAS, Counties have a long history of providing critical services; and WHEREAS, County governments are the citizen's local government voice, providing solutions that bring communities together. Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners, does hereby proclaim April 23-29, 2006 as National County Government Week in Orange County, North Carolina.
