PROCLAMATION
HEROES OF 2001 STAMP DAY
WHEREAS, since 1775, the U.S. Postal Service has connected friends, families,
neighbors and businesses by mail; and
WHEREAS, local branches of the U. S. Postal Service are significant community
resources and sources of local pride; and,
WHEREAS, the issuance of the first United States commemorative postage stamp in
honor of Benjamin Franklin in 1847, stamp collectors have treasured these
depictions of great Americans, momentous events and historic places in
our national history; and
WHEREAS, more than 22 million Americans collect stamps, making stamp collecting
one of the most popular hobbies in the nation; and
WHEREAS, the fire, police and emergency personnel provide an invaluable service to
our community; and
WHEREAS, every day these brave police, fire and emergency personnel risk their lives
in efforts that help save lives; and
WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service has seen fit to issue a special
commemorative "semipostal" U.S. postage stamps entitled "The Heroes of
2001" to honor those men and women who gave their lives in the rescue
efforts following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001;
NOW, THEREFORE, do we,the Orange County Board of Commissioners, hereby
proclaim June 7, 2002, as
HEROES OF 2001 STAMP DAY
in Orange County and proclaim this observance to all residents of Orange
County and encourage all to pay tribute to the spirit and resolve of our
great country and to recognize the important roles our fire, police and
emergency workers play in our everyday lives.
