BACKGROUND: Bob Hall has had a positive impact on changing politics in the South. From fighting racism in his younger years during the early 1960s to driving campaign finance reform today, Bob Hall has improved the Iccal democratic process. As a resident of Orange County, he has been appointed by the BOCG to serve on the Economic Development Commission, the Jury Commission, and the Comprehensive Plan Land Use Committee. Bob Hall has provided research to bring to light the use of special-interest money in U.S. Senate races, hog farming, and road-building and continues, to this day, to fight to improve campaign funding regulations, FINANCIAL IMPACT: NONE RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adapt the attached resolution recognizing Bob Hall for community volunteer involvement and his active role in campaign finance reform across the State of North Carolina, ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE BOB HALL FOR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND POLITICAL REFORM AND OVERSIGHT WHEREAS, Bob Hall has served the citizens of Orange County and the State of North Carolina through his political activism and volunteer efforts; and WHEREAS, he was a civil rights activist during a time of social turmoil fighting racism on the front lines; and WHEREAS, Bob Hall was the founding editor of Southern Exposure magazine examining culture and politics in the South; and WHEREAS, he has served through appointment by the Orange County Board of Commissioners on the Economic Development Commission, including serving as Chair, the Jury Commission, and the Comprehensive Plan Land Use Committee; and WHEREAS, in the best progressive tradition of Orange County, Bob Hall has charged forward as a crusader to transform campaign financing rules for candidates for public office; and WHEREAS, while serving as Executive Director and Research Director of Democracy North Carolina, Bob Hall has focused on electoral refornl and the pernicious influence of money in politics; and WHEREAS, as a campaign watchdog, he has demonstrated his passion to reform money-driven politics and the role ofspecial-interest money from hog farming to road building; NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners does hereby recognize Bob Hall and acknowledge his hard work and endless hours of research in pursuing campaign finance reform for North Carolina and volunteering to serve the people of Orange County and the entire State of North Carolina..
