PURPOSE: To officially recognize March 2006 as Women's History Month in Orange County,
BACKGROUND: The Orange County Commission for Women will celebrate Women's History
Month with a presentation of the nationally renown play, "Words of Choice", as adapted by
Cindy Cooper, on Sunday, March 26 at 6:30p.m. at the Carrboro Century Center. Tickets
are $20 although reduced rates are available for seniors, students and those who have
economic need, Two local poets will open the show. Tickets will be available at Weaver St,
Market, Cameron's and from the Department or individual Commission members,
Approximately 180 tickets are available,
Current cosponsors include: Orange County Human Relations Commission, Orange County
Rape Crisis Center, NC NOW, Raleigh NOW, Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina,
IPAS and the Chapel Hill Feminist Student Union.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION (S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the
proclamation and authorize the Chair to sign it.

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, American women of every culture, class, and ethnic background have made
historic contributions to the growth and strength of our nation in countless recorded and
unrecorded ways; and
WHEREAS, American women have played and continue to play a critical economic,
cultural, and social role in every sphere of the life of the nation by constituting a significant portion
of the labor force working inside and outride of the home; and
WHEREAS, American women have played a unique role throughout the history of the
Nation by providing the majority of the volunteer labor force of the nation; and
WHEREAS, American women of every culture, class, and ethnic background served as
early leaders in the forefront of every major progressive social change movement; and
WHEREAS, American women have been leaders, not only in securing their own rights
of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation
movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and other movements,
especially the peace movement, which create a more fair and just society for all; and
WHEREAS, despite these contributions, the role of American women in history has
been consistently overlooked and undervalued, in the literature, teaching and study of American
history; and
WHEREAS, women and their families continue to be undervalued in society through
continuing pay inequity, educational inequality, discrimination and marginalization, and
WHEREAS, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners, on March 25, 1976,
established the Orange County Commission for Women to promote the growth and development
of all Orange County women and the Commission has been doing that for more than 25 years;
Now, THEREFORE, do we, the Board of Commissioners of Orange County, North Carolina
hereby proclaim March 2006 as "Women's History Month" and commend this observance to
Orange County residents.
