PURPOSE: To consider a resolution celebrating the silver anniversary of Hillsborough Hog Day.
BACKGROUND: For 25 years, the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce has
conducted Hog Day in the downtown area of Hillsborough. This family friendly festival has
focused positive national attention on Orange County and attracted thousands of visitors each
summer. Hog Day celebrates one of North Carolina's most important agricultural products,
pork, by hosting 30 teams of cookers who turn three tons of pork into slow cooked barbecue.
With rides for the kids, arts and craft displays, and a diverse selection of musical entertainment,
Hog Day has something for everyone.
Hillsborough Hog Day will be celebrated on Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16, 2007 near
Cameron Park School in downtown Hillsborough.
There is a Joint Resolution recognizing Hog Day before the General Assembly of North
Carolina. The resolution has passed the House and is under consideration in the Senate.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
REGOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the attached
resolution recognizing Hillsborough Hog Day for 25 years of barbecue and fun in Orange County
and authorize the Chair to sign the resolution on behalf of the Board of Commissioners.

RESOLUTION
CELEBRATING THE 25T" ANNIVERSARY OF
HILLSBOROUGH HOG DAY
WHEREAS, the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce has conducted
Hillsborough Hog Day in Orange County for 25 years; and,
WHEREAS, Hillsborough Hog Day has grown from a small bake sale into an
established summer festival attracting national attention; and,
WHEREAS, family-friendly fun with a wide array of entertainment from diverse musical
groups to arts and craft displays draws thousands of visitors to Orange
County on the third weekend in June each year; and,
WHEREAS, Hillsborough Hog Day celebrates one of North Carolina's most important
agricultural products, pork, by hosting 30 teams of cookers to turn three
tons of pork into slow cooked barbecue for consumption by Hog Day
attendees; and,
WHEREAS, Hillsborough Hog Day is coordinated by the members and staff of the
Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce with hard-working
volunteers from organizations, businesses, and civic groups from across
the county; and,
WHEREAS, Hillsborough Hog Day was named one of the "Summer's. Best Activities" by
MSN.com in 2005; and,
WHEREAS, Hog Day was reference specifically when the National Trust for Historic
Preservation designated Hillsborough as one of America's "Dozen
Distinctive Destinations" in 2007; and,
WHEREAS, the Silver Anniversary of Hillsborough Hog Day will be celebrated on
Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16, 2007;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners do
hereby recognize Hillsborough Hog Day for 25 years of barbecue and fun
in Orange County.

A JOINT RESOLUTION HONORING HILLSBOROUGH HOG DAY ON ITS
TWENTY-FIFTH AS1I~]IVERSARY.
Whereas, the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce has
conducted Hillsborough Hog Day, in Downtown Hillsborough, North Carolina, for 25
years; and
Whereas, Hillsborough was mapped out in 1754 on land where the Great
Indian Trading Path crossed the Eno River; and
Whereas, Hillsborough has been the home of individuals who have made a
difference in and for our State, including William Churton, who laid out the town;
Thomas Day, anAfrican-American furniture maker; William Hooper, a North Carolina
signer of the Declaration of Independence; Elizabeth Keckley, a former slave who went
on to become Mary Todd Lincoln's White House seamstress; and William Graham,
Governor of North Carolina, United States Senator, a Secretary of the Navy; and
Whereas, based on the strong foundation of these individuals and many
others, Hillsborough is a culturally diverse village and the county seat for Orange
County; and
Whereas, the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce, Town of
Hillsborough, and Orange County government invite thousands of visitors to join the
festivities on the third weekend in June for Hillsborough Hog Day; and
Whereas, Hillsborough Hog Day has grown from a small bake sale into an
established, important community event attracting up to 35,000 residents and visitors
who come to celebrate the Town of Hillsborough; and
Whereas, the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce continues
to present family-friendly, safe, fun entertainment to the community and to its visitors
on the third Friday and Saturday of each June; and
Whereas, Hillsborough Hog Day presents a wide array of musical
entertainment over a day and a half, all with North Carolina roots; and
Whereas, Hillsborough Hog Day celebrates one of North Carolina's most
important agricultural products, pork, by hosting 30 teams of cookers to prepare three
tons of slow-cooked barbecue for sale to and consumption by Hog Day attendees; and

Whereas, Hillsborough Hog Day is planned and presented by a hardworking
group of volunteers and by staff of the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of
Commerce; and
Whereas, Hillsborough Hog Day was named in 2005 by MSN.com as one of
the "Sluruner's Best Activities;" and
Whereas, Hillsborough Hog Day has become a unique opportunity to visit
one of North Carolina's three Destinations of Distinction, as designated by the National
Trust for Historic Preservation; and
Whereas, plans have been made to celebrate the 25th anniversary of
Hillsborough Hog Day on Friday, June 15, and Saturday, June 16, 2007; Now,
therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
SECTION 1. The General Assembly honors Hillsborough Hog Day on its
25th anniversary.
SECTION 2. The General Assembly honors the memory of former
Hillsborough citizens who have made outstanding contributions to the Town of
Hillsborough and the State of North Carolina.
SECTION 3. The Secretary of State shall transmit a certified copy of this
resolution to the President of the Board of Directors of the Hilisborough/Orange County
Chamber of Commerce.
SECTION 4. This resolution is effective upon ratification.
