PURPOSE: To designate the week of April 11 through 17, 1993 as
National Telecommunicators ' Week in Orange County.
BACKGROUND:
The President of Associated Public-Safety Communications
Officers, Inc. has proclaimed the week of April 11 through
17, 1993 as National Telecommunicator's Week to recognize
the contribution telecommunicators make to the citizens of
the United States during times of disaster or life
threatening emergencies. The Orange County Communications
Center receives and dispatches emergency calls and calls
for service for Orange County and all its municipalities.
Telecommunicators answered over 450,000 phone calls and
initiated over 85,000 dispatches in their service to the
citizens of the County over the past year. Orange County
Telecommunicators are among the best trained and
disciplined in North Carolina.
RECOMMENDATION:
The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the
proclamation designating the week of April 11 through 17,
1993 as National Telecommunicators Week, in Orange County.

WHEREAS, Thousands of dedicated Telecommunicators daily serve the
citizens of the United. States and Canada by answering their
telephone calls for police, fire and emergency medical
services by dispatching the appropriate assistance as quickly
as possible; and
WHEREAS, The critical functions performed by professional Telecommuni-
cators also include those related to forestry and conservation
operations, highway safety and maintenance activities, and
many other operations performed by federal, state and local
government agencies; and
WHEREAS, Professional Telecommunicators work to improve the emergency
response capabilities of these communication systems through
their leadership and participation in training programs and
other activities provided by the Associated Public-Safety
Communications Officers, Inc. ; and
WHEREAS, The Associated Public-Safety Communications Officers, Inc. , an
organization of nearly 10, 000 people engaged in the design,
installation and operation of emergency response
communications, has set aside the week beginning April 11,
1993 to recognize Telecommunicators and their crucial role in
the protection of life and property; and
WHEREAS, The telecommunicators of Orange County answer over 450, 000
phone calls and initiate over 85, 000 responses for Orange
County citizens in their time of need;
NOW, THEREFORE, We, The Orange County Board of Commissioners, hereby proclaim
the week of April 11 - 17, 1993 as "National Public Safety
Telecommunicators Week" in Orange County, North Carolina in
honor and recognition of our County's Telecommunicators and
the vital contributions they make to the safety and well-being
of our citizens.
