PURPOSE: To proclaim the week of April 17 - 24, 1993 as "Orange County
Government Week" and endorse activities planned during the week.
BACKGROUND: The National Association of County Commissioners and the
North Carolina Association of County Commissioners encourage
local governments to celebrate County Government Week in an
effort to educate citizens about county government.
The attached Calendar of Events (Attachment I) provides an
overview of planned activities to be held during this week.
These include a variety of educational as well as community
outreach activities. Because these activities will provide an
increased awareness of government operations, it is
recommended that Orange County proclaim the week of April 17 -
24, 1993 as "County Government Week" . A draft proclamation is
provided as Attachment II.
RECOMMENDATION(S) : The Manager recommends the Board adopt the proclamation
and endorse planned activities.

COUNTY GOVERNMENT WEEK
WHEREAS, The North Carolina Association of County Commissioners and
the National Association of County Commissioners have
encouraged citizens across the state and the nation to
learn more about county government's role in our lives; and
WHEREAS, Orange County government has served the citizens of the
County since 1752 and places its emphasis on addressing
citizens concerns and needs; and
WHEREAS, The elected and appointed officials of Orange County take
pride in serving the citizens in the County; and
WHEREAS, Orange County is on the forefront of many issues critical
to both our state and nation, including health care, child
and elder care, environmental protection, social services,
job training, emergency management services, drug and
alcohol abuse treatment, law enforcement, water and sewer
services, and library services; and
WHEREAS, Citizens may develop an increased awareness about county
services and resources through outreach efforts provided by
County officials.
NOW THEREFORE, We, the Orange County Board of Commissioners hereby
proclaim the week of April 17 - 24, 1993 as ORANGE COUNTY
GOVERNMENT WEEK, and further encourage all citizens to
become familiar with the services provided by Orange County
government.
