RESOLUTION ADOPTED BY MEBANE

PROPOSED RESOLUTION FOR Hillsborough - 732-8181
ORANGE COUNTY Durham - 688-7331
Mebane - 227-2031
Chapel Hill - 967-9251/968-4501
PURPOSE: A resolution to exclude the Mebane Telephone exchange
from the 910 area code.
BACKGROUND: Area telephone companies and the North Carolina
Utilities Commission are pursuing a new 910 area code.
The new code is needed because the 919 code is rapidly
running out of unassigned NXX codes. These three-
digit combinations designate local exchanges and are
required for the creation of new telephone numbers.
If all NXX codes are assigned, then no new exchanges
could be created and consequently no new telephone
numbers would be available. The present plan calls
for the Mebane Exchange to become part of the new 910
area code area and thus split from the rest of the
Orange County telephone exchanges which will remain in
the 919 area code area.
The Mebane City Council has adopted the attached
resolution calling for the Mebane Exchange to remain
in the 919 area code area. This resolution is
supported by Mebane Home Phone Cbmpany. The Board of
County Commissioners are being asked to adopt a
similar resolution.
RECOMMENDATION: The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the
proposed resolution and authorize the Chair to sign.
