PURPOSE: To address the questions raised at the March 27, 2007 BOCC meeting regarding
amendments to class size ratios and school capacity.
BACKGROUND:
Origin: March 27, 2007 BOCC meeting -Questions regarding class size ratios
and school capacity.
Who's
Involved: SAPFOTAC
Status: Clarification regarding school capacity was received from the school
districts.
Upcoming
Issue: Certification of 2007 SAPFOTAC report in June.
Description: There were questions from the BOCC regarding the reduction in seats
available at the Elementary level when reduced class size ratios are
implemented the year after the next elementary school opens.
Full Report: ' In response to a BOCC request for additional information, both school
districts were asked to verify their previously reported capacity numbers
when the K-3 class size reductions go into effect.
The recalculated Elementary level capacity figures are as follows:
Chapel Hill - Carrboro City Schools: capacity of 4,659 which is a
reduction of 262 seats from current capacity levels (no change from
previously reported figures). .
Orange County Schools: capacity of 3,694 which is a reduction of 228
seats from current capacity levels (a change in the previously reported
reduction of 283 seats).

What's Next
and When will SAPFO partners were asked to submit comments on the 2007
BOCC SAPFOTAC Report by May 16, 2007. The BOCC will be asked to certify
Review: the Annual report at the June 12, 2007 regular meeting.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact in receiving this information.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive this information.
