PURPOSE: To review and consider a proposed name change for
the Commission for Women department.
BACKGROUND: For more than two years, the Commission for Women
staff have been providing staff support to the Human
Relations Commission. With the recent passage of the Orange
County Civil Rights Ordinance and its subsequent adoption by
the municipalities, the importance of selecting a name that
more accurately reflects the dual nature of the department
has grown. After extensive discussion on both Commissions ,
the vast majority of members from both Commissions have
proposed that the department be renamed the Department for
Human Rights and Relations . The Commission for Women and the
Human Relations Commission would each retain their own name
as commissions .
RECOMMENDATION(S) : The Manager recommends that the Board
approve this proposal .
