PURPOSE: To proclaim the weeks of April 23 -May 17, 2007 as Orange County Senior
Games Events Days and May 15 -July 28, 2007 as SilverArts days and to encourage residents
age 55 and over to participate and the general public to be observers.
BACKGROUND: The first Orange County Senior Games were held in May 1988 with 69
participants in athletic events ranging from softball throw to tennis, and with 100 Orange County
volunteers. In the years since 1988, the numbers have steadily grown, as organizers placed
more emphasis on year round wellness programming and added new events. Each of the 180
plus participants benefit greatly from participation in the games. This year marks the 20tH
anniversary of the Orange County Senior Games. Over the years, the games have expanded
both by the number of participants and the number of events offered.
SilverArts, celebrating its 10th anniversary, began in 1997 with its first senior juried show. A
variety of art forms are entered by senior artists and are on display such as -visual arts,
sculpture, pottery, jewelry making and lace making, photography and woodwork - to name a
few. The SilverArts Opening Reception Tea will be held this year at the Robert and Pearl
Seymour Center on Monday, May 21 at 3 p.m.

Dana Hughes, 2007 Orange County Senior Games Coordinator and Doris Murrell, a
Senior Games Ambassador will be present to accept the proclamation.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The financial impact is already absorbed by the County budget in the
allocated funds for designated staff of the Department on Aging and Recreation and Parks
Department who work with this program. The program revenue generated by registration fees
also helps to fund the project. The Senior Games planning committee also actively works to
identify community partners.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board of County Commissioners
approve the proclamation declaring April 23 -May 17, 2007 Orange County Senior Games
Events Days and May 15 -July 28, 2007 as SilverArts days, a part of Orange County Senior
Games, and authorize the Chair to sign.

Whereas, Population studies indicate there are more than 24,000 persons over 55 years
of age in Orange County; and,
Whereas, Orange County government recognizes the value of health, fitness, and social
well-being, and understands the challenges faced by mature adults in
pursuing regular exercise, healthful eating, volunteer opportunities, and
community engagement; and
Whereas, Promoting and developing aging-friendly communities built on active
living principles emerged as a central theme in the recent Master Aging Plan
Update process; and
Whereas, Orange County Senior Games provides a special opportunity for persons over
55 to affirm health and fitness through spirited athletic competition and
celebration; and
Whereas, Orange County calls upon governmental agencies, community partners, local
businesses, and residents of ali ages to strive and achieve active, healthy
lifestyles; and,
Whereas, Orange County solicits the special support and participation of county
residents age 55 and older in the many events and activities planned as part of
the 2007 Senior Games;
NOW, BE IT THEREFORE PROCLAIMED, that the Orange County Board of
Commissioners declare Apri123 -May 17 as Athletic Events days and
May 15 -July 28 as SilverArts days, a part of
ORANGE COUNTY SENIOR GAMES
AND ENCOURAGES CITIZENS AGE 55 AND OVER
TO COME OUT AND PLAY!
