RE: Appointee for OPC Area Board
DATE: February 26, 2007
I am writing to support the appointment of Lynn Ikenberry, M.D., PhD., to the Area Board of Orange
Person Chatham Area Program.
Dr. Ikenberry received an undergraduate degree from Duke University in 1957. In 1963, he received
a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Chicago. He received his medical training at the
University of North Carolina and completed a residency in Psychiatry there in 1977.
Since 1977 Dr. Ikenberry has been in private practice in Psychiatry in Chapel Hill. He holds an
active North Carolina medical license and is in good standing with the North Carolina Medical Board.
He has volunteered in the community with several organizations. For three years, Dr. Ikenberry
served on the board of Threshold, a psychosocial rehabilitation program in Durham. He was a
.member of the board of the Chapel Hill Tennis Club for six years and served as president for three
years.
Dr. Ikenberry's wife, Carolyn, is a social worker who recently retired from OPC after serving as
director of the Child and Family Services unit for several years.
Dr. Ikenberry is well-qualified to serve on OPC's Area Board, and I would strongly support his
appointment. Thank you for your attention to this information-and please do not hesitate to call my
office should you. need anything further.

I am excited forthe possibility to serve on the OPC Area Board to promote the welfare of
the residents of these counties. I work in this field and passionately care for the welfare
of those in need of mental health services. I hope to be able to serve the community in
this avenue in order to actually facilitate change and influence policy for this population of

Boards/Commissions applied for:
Orange-Person-Chatham Area Programs Board
Work Experience:
I have taught Public Finance at the UNC Institute and School of Government for a little
over 30 years. This had involved providing advice to county budget, finance, and
administrative staff. In the 1960's, I lived and worked in Venezuela for 2.5 years. Our
oldest child was born there. At that time, I became fluent in Spanish. Although my
Spanish is rusty, I am~able to converse with Hispanics and Latinos in Spanish.
Volunteer Experience:
For the last six years I have been on the County's Nursing Home Community Adv.
Committee, serving as chair three years ago. I rotated off this board June 30.
Education:
PhD in Public Administration, Cornell University; MPIA, School of Public and
International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh; B.S. School of Foreign Service,
Georgetown University..
Other Comments:
Our family is bi-racial. My wife and I have 3 children and 8 grandchildren. Of the 8
grandchildren, four are bi-racial (African-American and Caucasian) and four are
Caucasian. This family background and a familiarity with the Spanish. language underlie
my interest in serving on the Human Rights Commission. If that is-not availiable, prior
service on the Nursing Home Committee contributes to my interest in the Adult Care
Home Community Adv. Committee. I am also interested in Mental Health issues which is
why I am interested in OPC Area .Programs Board. STAFF COMMENTS: Reapplied
