THIS AGRET"MENT, entered into this 17th day of June, 201 5,, by and between Orange County
("County"), by and through the Orange County Arts Commission ("Ails Commission") Lind
Carrboro Elementary School ("(:rant Recipient"),
WHEREAS, the Arts Commission is a countywide arts agency that ensures the growd-1 of
local arts experiences by providing funding and supp�ort for diverse high qt,,iality programs curd
pro.iects,
Wl IEREAS, the Arts Commission administers the Spring and Fall Arts Grants Program
to provide economic opportunities to, Orange County artists and non-profit organizations
coordinating arts pr(Ijects benefiting the citizens of Orange County.
WHEREAS, the Spring Arts Grants Program is supported by Arts Conimission with
funds ftom the Grassroots Program of the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency of' the
Department of Cultural Resources and the National Endowment for the Arts.
WHERE"AS, the Grant Recipient was selected by the Arts, Commission to receive the
Spring Arts Grant through, the procedures duly adopted ley the Arts Commission; and
WIJI'.,1REAS, both parties wish to promote and maintain the integrity and clarity of the
Grant Recipient's ideas and statements and delineate the Grant Recipient's obligations to the
County;
NOW, Tf IF,REFOR.1"", the County and the Grant Recipient, for the consideration and
under the conditions hereinafter set forth, agree as follows,:
I Approved Grant Project, Grarit funds are provided under this Agreement ffir the project
("Project") described in the Grant Recipient's Grant Application, attached hereto wid
incorporated herein as Exhibit A.
1 ('rant Award. Grant funds in an arnount not to exceed one thousand dollars ($1,000)
have been awarded by the Arts Comillission, to the Grant Recipient for the approved
Project, These funds must be matched at least dollar-for-dollar with cash from the 0rant
'Recipient"s funds, not derived from either Orange County appropriations or the North
Carolina Arts Council,
3. Contingelicy. This grant is contingent.can North Carolina Arts Council Grassroolts
Prograin funding to the Arts Commission. Final decisions on Grassroots Program funds
to the North Carolina Ails Council are sut1ject to approval by the North Carolina General
Assembly.
4. Responsibilities of the Grant Recipient

D, Records. Grant Recipient must maintain records, and other evidence pertaining
to costs incurred and revenues acquired during the Project irriplenientition. Grant
Recipient shall, maintain financial records pertaining to the Project for three (3,)
years from the (late of this Agreenient, in case of audit.
E Use of Funds. Grant Recipient shall not use the grant funds to, repay outstanding

purpose of implementing the Project and Project related expenses,.
F. Final Rgo°t. Grant Recipient shall submit to the Arts Commission a.Final Report
on July 8, 2016 . The Final Report shall be in the format required by the
North Carolina Arts Council. Failure to sub.nift the Final Report or late
submission of the Final Report, for any reason, shall be grounds for denial and/or
cancellation of grant funds for the Project and future grant proposals,

A. Acknowledgement, Credit must be given to the Orange County Arts

7'. Indemnity. The Cirant Recipient agrees to indemnify and hold harniless the County, the

from any and all claims or actual injury, damage or loss to as person, or real or personal
property that results from or is in any way connected to the use of the:grant farads.
8, Independent Contractor, The Grant Recipient is an independent contractor and not an
employee, agent or other representative: of the C,,ounty and/or the Arts C,orninission,
Nothing contained in this Agreet-nent, shall be construed to create the relationship of
principal and agent, or employer and employee, between Grant Recipient and Arts
Commission or Orange County Government, Grant Recipient understands and agrees
that he/she is not authorized to irICUr any expenses or any liability whatsoever on behalf
of the County or the Arts Conimission find has no authority, expressed or implied, to
obligate or make representations on behalf of the County or the Arts Commission. In
addition, Grant Recipient agrees to maintain his or her own worker's compensation
insurance fior himsell7herself and his, or her employees for the duration of the art work's
installation.
9. Termination
A. In the event of any ol'the CirWn'i stances set Barth below (hereinafter re.terred to as
"default"), the Arts ('11ommission may immediately terminate this Agreement:
(i) Any fraUdulent. representation in any verification required to obtain
payment under this Agreement or other dishonesty on a inaterial matter
relating to the performance of services under this Agreement.
(H) Nonperforniance, incomplete service or perforinance, or fifflure to
satisfactorily perfarm any part of the Project or to comply with any
provision of this Agreement, as determined by the Arts Con-unission, in its
sole,discretion.

(iii) Failure to adhere to the terms of app]icable county, state or f deral laws,
regulations, or stated public policy.

discretion to elect to terininate this Agreement, in whole or in part and/or require
the Grant Recipient to repay the grant funds within seven (7) from written notice pl

Carrboro Elementary School Arts in Education Application
School Profile
Carrboro Elementary School (CES:) has been serving PreK-5th grade students in the heart of
Carrboro, NC for over 50:years. The school began: as a community based school and continues as a
strong community based school. The walk zone is large and the school participates in annual events to
support walking: and biking to school. Classes frequently take walking field trips to local businesses
and surrounding: parks and natural areas.
CES takes pride in our exceptional school community and offers a number of distinctive features and
programs including experiential learning, a Dual language program, and a focus on developmentally
appropriate practices of educating the whole child. The Dual Language program is an English-Spanish
immersion program with the goal of bilingual/biliteracy and multiculturalism by the time students exit
elementary school. The program is fully implemented with two to three classes at each grade level
PreK-6. Current Kindergartners are entering the program through a magnet model.
CES uses project based learning which integrates,content through units of study and experiential
learning. Many of our students lack background knowledge and experiences to support and connect
learning. Thus, this approach supports,the learning of these targeted groups while supporting all
students in a school:,experience that is integrated and more student centered. Each grade level; has
developed four to six units of study that culminate with a student developed project. The ultimate goal
for each child is to participate in learning that is authentic and engaging.
In 2013-2014, Carrboro Elementary School served approximately 513 students PreK-5(48 in PreK)
with the demographics as below for grades K-5.

III. Carrboro, Elementary School':s Arts Programs
Arts programming is an integral part of learning at CES and students have many different ways,to be
exposed to art music,theater and dance. Our arts programs are also an important way that students

learn about other cultures. Students attend Art and Music classes for 45 minutes each week. In Music
they learn:about music through singing, listening, moving, composing, and playing instruments. In Art
they use paint, drawing materials, clay, fibers and mixed medi,um. Students also study artists, cultures
and types of art.
In our extra-curricular theater program, students have created and produced full-length theatrical
productions for the past five years including "Seussical Jr.," "The Jungle Book," "School House Rock,"
and "Charlie&the Chocolate Factory."This past year, 118 students,created and produced "The
Wizard of Oz"'after school, over a three-month period. The school community provided impressive
support of close to $2,000 in donations and services. In addition, 5th graders at CES participate in a
24-hour play festival where students get an intense 24 hour theatrical experience. Students are given
the opportunity to either be a director or an actor and within 24 hours,they block,: costume, prop and
rehearse their specific play. This year we performed seven plays. The school has received support to
put on a production of"The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe"for the 20151201::61 school year.
In 2014/2015, CES had art programming in our after school clubs where students experienced
drumming, guitar playing, sewing, film, dance, cartooning and crocheting/knitting. Our music teacher
offers STOMPing Sounds twice a year which: is a movement club exploring:,the music of the group:
STOMP and helping students,make music using everyday items as instruments. Additionally,we
offered an after school club called Young Rernbrandts (run by an outside group)which teaches
students drawing skills. Our summer programming includes a two week Summer Theater camp and a
Dance Camp run through Community Schools.
Ill. Proposed Use of Grant Funds
Carrboro Elementary School strives to bring diverse,performers to our school community with unique
perspectives on multicultural: education through music, dance, and storytelling.We are requesting the
assistance of the Orange County Arts Commission: in bringing two performance groups to CES. We
believe the two:groups we have chosen will have a significant impact on our students who are already
exposed to a variety of different cultures through their diverse school community.
Mister G, is a Latin GRAMMY nominated musician and is a leading
figure in the children's music world. Mister G has two acclaimed bilingual:CDs and his video for
Vamos a la Maya"was featured on national:television during Hispanic Heritage Month, ARQ..E1Qsta,
his literacy-th!emed:, bilingual CD, was released in September 2�0,13, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage,
Month, Inspired,by his tours throughout Latin America, including Mexico, Guatemala, and Colombia,
the album spans,a wide range of musical styles from rock to reggae, funk to folk and a host of Latin
influences. His 2012 release, Qh
aggLa m!gr, a collection of original, bilingual songs,won: a Parents'
Choice Gold Award.,
We believe Mister G:s Vamos a la Playa" show will be a great fit for our school with our large Latino,
community and our extensive study of the Spanish language and Latin American! culture.We plan to
host Mr, G for two shows at$1,700. Please find attached Mister G's press kit with further information
about his performances.
The other group we would like to bring to our school is Didgeridoo Down Under(DDU)
tj rrij, a high-energy, Austral�i:a-th,emed show that combines music,

culture, science, literacy,development, puppetry, comedy, character building and audience
participation.The performers,, Rob Thomas and Tanya Gerard: have been performing:with and making
didgeridoos for more than 20 years. The didgeridoo, usually a hollowed-cut tree trunk, has been
played by Aboriginal Australians for at least 1,500 years, and is known for its otherworldly sound.
DDU has recorded several: CDs, and have produced music for numerous films. See here videos of

appreciation of world music and art in our students and promote tolerance and respect for all people
and cultures.. We plan to host two DDU shows for$1',560.
We are asking for$1�,000 to host these two artists in our school's auditorium. We plan to host two
Mister G shows in early November 2015, following Hispanic Heritage month!. In early January we will'.
host Didgeridoo Down: Under for two shows.
The Carrboro Elementary PTA has raised funds:to sponsor similar shows in the past. In the 201!4/2015
school year we hosted David Gonzalez's"Cuentos: Tales from the Latino World,":the Gizmo Guys
"Objects in Motion"(Comedic Science and Math)and Bright Star Children's Theatre. We typically have
artists do two performances,in our auditorium, one for grades K-2 and one for grades 3-5. There are
about around 240-260 students in each show. The demographics of the audience Is described on
page I of this application.
CE, is well equipped to host these groups,. Our school has a performance stage that can easily
accommodate the casts,of each group. The administrative staff of our school fully supports our efforts
to bring these groups,to our school. Our Parent Teacher Association is prepared to host the events,,
and the art and music departments are prepared to help finalize details of the shows. Once funding: is
secure,, the Carrboro PTA will disseminate information to school administrators and teachers that
describes the performances and includes study guides aligned with our curriculum goals.
After careful consideration, we decided that Mister G:and Didgeridoo Down! Under closely align with
our curriculum objectives at CE . We adhere to the North:Carolina Standard Course of Study for
guidance in curriculum standards. For example, an essential outcome in the State arts,curriculum is
K.MR.1 Understand the Interacting elements to respond to music and music performances.We
believe both:of our musical performances,fulfill this curriculum objective.
Another standard is KCRA Understand global, Interdisciplinary, and 21st century connections
with music. Mister G's interactive program uses music and instruments,to bring the culture of Latin
America to life and further a better understanding of the people and their customs, Didgerldoo Down
Under's Australia-Chemed show combines music, culture and art and will work well to fulfill the
objective of recognizing the relationships between:, music and concepts from other areas,of the world'.
Carrboro Elementary is pleased'to have the opportunity to apply for funding which would:facilitate
bringing these exciting artists to our school. The lives of students and families would be greatly
enriched if we could host these events. The Parent Teacher Association of CE S is prepared to raise
the matching funds if we were to be awarded monies from the Orange County Arts Commission,

Program: Descriptions
1) Didgerldoo Down Under is a high-energy, Australia-therned show that combines music,
culture, science, literacy development, puppetry, comedy, character building and audience

The didgeridoo is an Australian Aboriginal instrument with a funky, fresh sound that's as exotic
as its name. In this upbeat workshop, participants learn to play the "didge" -- including animal
sounds and simple rhythms -- with our beginner PVC didgeridoos. Come experience a

and percussion instruments mixed with colorful stories and humor. The didgeridoo, usually a.

Curren Liebman created DDU in 2003, and since then it has evolved into one of the most
popular "edu-tainment`" programs in the U.S.. Darren and his didge mates perform year-round at
schools, libraries, festivals and other venues. They have presented more than 5,000 shows and
workshops at ,000-plus venues for well over 400,,000 viewers and participants]'.
Rob Thomas and'Tanya Gerard have been performing with and making didgeridoos for 20-plus
