SUBJECT: New Slogan for Interstate NCDOT Welcome Sign

PURPOSE: To review slogans submitted for the Interstate Welcome Sign campaign that
encouraged residents to help Orange County develop a slogan for its Interstate Welcome Signs.
BACKGROUND: Currently the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT)
Interstate sign on 1-40 (west bound exit 269) uses the slogan, "You'll be a Fan for Life." NCDOT
needs to replace the sign due to damage. Prior to its replacement, the Board of County
Commissioners embarked on an initiative to develop a new slogan to be incorporated into the
welcome sign. The slogan contest was implemented by the Orange County Visitors Bureau,
using a local media partner to promote the campaign and track submissions. From the nearly
900 slogans submitted, the list was narrowed to 495. From there, duplicates and Chapel Hill
(exclusively) slogans were eliminated, which provided 51 slogans which were viable for
consideration.
At the contest's end in mid-January, the Visitors Bureau's media partner worked with the Board
to narrow the list to 11. This list of 11 was posted on media sites for public review and feedback
through an on-line opinion poll. More than 2,000 people weighed in, ranking the slogans:

2. Around the corner, ahead of the curve 322 votes
3. Where great minds think differently 276 votes
4. Where education meets opportunity 202 votes
5. Think free and dream big 170 votes
6. One of life's better choices 149 votes
7. We've got a corner of the Triangle 128 votes
8. Proudly progressive 126 votes
9. Creativity, innovation, hope 122 votes
10.Progressive and impressive 78 votes
11.A community with appeal 62 votes

FINANCIAL IMPACT: No County funds will be used to repair the sign as NCDOT will address
those costs.
SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following two Orange County Social Justice Goals are
applicable to this agenda item:
• GOAL: ENSURE ECONOMIC SELF-SUFFICIENCY
The creation and preservation of infrastructure, policies, programs and funding necessary
for residents to provide shelter, food, clothing and medical care for themselves and their
dependents.
Reminding motorists of the community's brand helps ensure economic self-sufficiency. Signage
is a form of branding, which helps attract economic development. Economic Development helps

• GOAL: ENABLE FULL CIVIC PARTICIPATION
Ensure that Orange County residents are able to engage government through voting and
volunteering by eliminating disparities in participation and barriers to participation.
Holding a contest such as this helps ensure that Orange County residents are able to engage in

RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board choose a slogan to use on
the new Interstate 40 Welcome Sign and discuss other potential uses for the new slogan.
