PURPOSE: To provide the Board of Commissioners with an update on the Fifth Annual Youth
Voices Summer Leadership Training Institute.
BACKGROUND: In July 2007, Orange County conducted its fifth annual Summer Leadership
Training Institute for area youth. This program, administered by Cooperative Extension, is a
collaborative effort between the County Manager's Office, Cooperative Extension and Triangle
United Way. For the past five years, approximately 15 students have spent six weeks of their
summer vacation in a program that provides them with an opportunity to:
a) Build leadership;
b) Demonstrate community service;
c) Collaborate with community and government services; and
d) Enhance the beautification of the Orange County Community
One graduate from the program, Ruth Mayo, and Project Coordinator Khalia Jones will present
a report and answer questions at the meeting.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with receiving the update.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the update for
informational purposes.
