SUBJECT: Coalition of Excellence Award for Orange County Healthy Carolinians

PURPOSE: To recognize the accomplishment of the Orange County Healthy Carolinians
Council.
BACKGROUND: The North Carolina Prevention Partners is anon-profit organization whose
mission is to put prevention first for a healthier North Carolina by fostering partnerships for
prevention, promoting prevention, and influencing policies for prevention. Each year, the group
holds an awards ceremony at its annual meeting. At its 2007 annual meeting in June, the
Healthy Carolinians of Orange County received the "Coalition Excellence" award. The award is
for a coalition that works toward improving health through prevention efforts. Specifically cited
in the award nomination was:
• Joint work on producing a recreation map for the entire County
• Eat Smart Move More projects with minority churches to improve nutrition and physical
activity for community members, and
• Work with County government to begin an employee health program that emphasizes
health risk appraisals, education, physical activity and improved nutrition.
Stephanie Willis, the current Chair of the Healthy Carolinians Council, Maria Hitt, the former
Coordinator of the coalition, and Health Director Rosemary Summers were present to accept the
award.
The Health Department is also pleased to introduce the new Coordinator of Healthy Carolinians,
Bobbi Jo Munson, who began work on July 9. Ms. Munson did an internship with North Carolina
Prevention Partners during her graduate program.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board congratulate the Healthy
Carolinians of Orange County for receiving the "Coalition Excellence" award and thank the
group members for their hard work toward improving health through prevention efforts.
