Efland and R. J. M. Aobba. Rtembera absent: None Upon motion duly made and seconded Aid to Blind grants rre re enprovsd as follows: Grant of inaTg L. Rioore - reJected. Grant of Nora Neshington - reduced from $51.00 per month to .5,'I}7.00 per month. Grant of James P!. Hamlet for 539.00 per month - approved. Upon motion duly made and seconded, November 26th was declared a Holiday for all county employees. Upon motl on of Commissioner Hobbs, seconded by Commissioner Efland, it was drdsred that due to erroneous listing the 1953 tax valuation on Campus Cafe, Chapel Hill, be reduced from X5,000 to $2,000. Unon motion of Conmissl oner Hobbs and seconded by Commissioner Efland the following resolution was unanimously adoete d: i'1~REAS, the County of Orenre has funds on deposit with the Durham 3enk and mrust Company, Hillsboro, N. C., end it is now no cessery that certain changes and nrovi sions be mode as tc the same. 1. To Change the acoount heretofore desLm=tnd as "Orange County Funds, Margaret E. Howard, Actdrig'Couaty Accountant" to "Orange County Funds, 5. ;d. Gattis, County Accountant". 2. Te change the account heretofore designated "Vlelfare Account, fifergaret E. Howard, Acting County Accountant" to "{Velfere"Account, S. M. Gattis, County Accountant". 3. To honor and peg all checks or drafts on any of said ftinda signed by S. M. Gattis, County Accountant, without requiring the counter signature of any other person or official of the said County. The foregoing resolution effective on and after November 2, 195.3• VtHEREAS, Orange County has recently completed its Blcente nniel Celebratic end the county and Its citizens are rS.cher in the appreciation of its heritage through the various events of the celebration--the laying of the cornerstone c the new court house, the dadiea ti oa of the new court house, the publication of the history of the County--Orange County 1752-1952--, the writing, prodssction and presentation of the historic pageant, "T}Nr ROAD TO ORANGE", end V11imREAS, many of the citizens of the county devoted freely of their time, talents and energies to the successful accomplishment of these avant s, end 4t7H';REAS, it is fit and proper that this body should in this manner recog• ni ze the debt of the county to those of its citizens and others who mods the Bic entanniel Celebratl on possible, N0:'1, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By the Board of Commiss ionsrs of Orange County in regular meeting assembled on this the 2nd day of November, 1953, the Orange County recognizes with appreciation and thanks the work of the varloua committees and individuals who r;eve of their time, talents and energies freely in the six-day celebration of Orange County's Bicentenni el Observance, and pert Scularly to its ci ti zene and others does the county re cognize, the following: To L. Hamlin and Roland Gi duz for publicity ror the events and to The News of Orange County, The Chapel Hill {~fe ekly, Tha Aearld-Sun Papers, The i'J4 Ptews and Observer, The Greensboro Daily Newa, The State 5tagazine, Radio Static V1DNC and WCHL for excellent coverage and publicity of the entire celebration and reviews of the history. To Edwin T. Howard, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Frae and Accepted Masons of North Carolina and Eagle Lodge No. 1q of Hillsboro and others members of the Grand Lodge for the laying of the corner-atone of the n~ court house as the opening exercise of the celebration. To Governor William_B. IImstead, Chief Justice William A. Devi n, and Tua t' R. Hunt Parker for their part is the dedication of the sew court house. To i11111am td. Pvgh and Eula Parrish (Mrs. V/. M.j Pugh Tor their work in rushing to completion the proof reading and publication of the county history in time for the celebration. To William Chance, Chairman of the Parade Committee for the Merchants Association of Hillsboro, and to Kenneth Putnam, Chairmen of the Parade C ommlttee for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Merchants Association, for their coons rati on in arranging two mammoth parades as two of the high points of the celebration, and nl so to the members of the two ass acla lions for their cooperation Sn arranging many historic displays. To Samuel Selde n, director of the Carolina Playmakers> for his general advice and guidance in the writing, directing and atageing of "TA'c ROAD TO ORAtIGE,° and without whose assistance the pageant could not have been pro- duced in the short time allotted. To Joha Ehle, author, James Leonard, general director, and John R. Haney, technical director, Foster Fitz-Simmons, narrator, William Trotman, Assistant to the Director, t7eslay Nalia ce, Speech Director, .and all of the others who were a part of the pa~eant staff for the writing, directing and stageing of "THE ROAD TO ORP,NGE,' for catching the spirit of the early p ioneor and the presentation of it in this dramatic and historic manner. To the Clarence O. Jones family, Edwin Heml in, W11li.am Mitchell, Paul Carr, Jr., Betty Juna .Hayes, Walter Creech, and all other Parsons who devoted many hours and days in the showing of "TfL ROAD TO ORA?IGE,' for a marvelous pageant. To Sake L. Conners and the members of his committee for the collection of horses, old vehicles, and many other props without which the pageant cculd not have bean properly produced. To Shanard-Strudwlck, T.?. Lloyd, 0. V. Cook and the other members of the Exhibits Committee for the Bari ous historic exhibits in the Court House and elsewhere in Hillsboro end in the Library at the IInivers ity of North Carolina and elsewhere in Chapel Hill. To the Hillsboro Garden Club for nrranging a Totrr of Historic Houses in and near Hillsboro for two days of the celebration which brought many persons to Hillsboro during that time. To SV. 5. Hogan, Postmaster of the Chapel Rill Post Office, and to Thomas E. Bivins, Postmaster of the Hillsboro Post Office, for obtaining and useing cancellation slogans for all mail sent through their offices for about six weeks prior to and during the week of the celebration, and to The Hospital Saving Associati an of Chapel Hill and the IIniversi ty of North Carolina at Chapel Rill for the use of slogan cancellations on their metered mail for the same time.
