Dear Mr. Evans:
The development of Carolina North offers both opportunities as well as challenges to our
community. As the Chapel Hill - Carrboro Board of Education looks to the future, we
anticipate that we will continue to experience growth in our student population. The new
jobs and housing. generated by Carolina North will drive the demand for additional school
capacity.
The Board of Education appreciates the University of North Carolina's willingness to set
aside at least one site for a public school at Carolina North and would like to begin a
conversation about when these sites will be needed and where they should be placed. We
respectfully request that the University commit to dedicating at least one site for a school
in Phase I of the development of Carolina North.
The Board will adopt along-range capital improvement plan this fall. However, based
upon student projections developed in conjunction with the Orange County Board of
Commissioners under the Schools Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance, we currently
anticipate that we will need the following schools in the near future:
Elementary School: #10 - to open in August, 2008 (construction has begun at Twin
Creeks site)
#11-needed to open in August, 2010
#12 -needed to open in August, 2017
Middle School: #5 - needed.to open in August, 2013
High School: Expansion of Carrboro High School -needed in August, 2014
