PURPOSE: To consider a resolution recognizing Ken Chavious, retiring Finance Director for
Orange County.
BACKGROUND: Ken Chavious is retiring after almost 30 yeas as a public servant. He began
his career with Orange County in 1978 as an Accounting Clerk, advancing up to Finance
Director, a position he has held since 1989. He has served at a state level as President of the
North Carolina Government Financial Officers Association and also as President of the North
Carolina Association of County Finance Directors.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the attached
resolution recognizing Ken Chavious for outstanding service to the people of Orange County.

F-ESOLUTION RECOGNIZING I~:EN CHAVIOUS
WHEREAS, Ken Chavious has retired as Orange County Finance Director after almost
30 years as a public servant; and,
WHEREAS, Ken Chavious was born and raised in Orange County, and is a proud
graduate of Orange High School in 1971, and a graduate of Fayetteville State
University in 1976; and,
WHEREAS, he began his career with Orange County in 1978 as an Accounting Clerlc,
advancing up to Finance Director, a position held since 1989; and,
WHEREAS, for each of the 18 years he served as Director of Finance, the Government
Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has awarded
Orange County the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial
Reporting; and,
WHEREAS, at a state level, Ken Chavious has served as President of the North
Carolina Government Financial Officers Association and also as President of
the North Carolina Association of County Finance Directory the first African
American to serve in this position; and,
WHEREAS, the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners recognized Ken
Chavious as Outstanding County Finance Officer in 2003;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners
do hereby recognize the Ken Chavious for his hard work, dedication and
exemplary service to the people of Orange County.
