HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda - 11-05-2007-4hORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT Meeting Dater November 5, 2007 Action Agenda Item No. ~- - h SUBJECT: Recreation and Parks Grant Applications DEPARTMENT: Recreation and Parks PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: Lori Taft, 245-2660 PURPOSE: To provide the opportunity for input from the Board of County Commissioners on a variety of grant opportunities available to the County through the Recreation and Parks Department. BACKGROUND: Recreation and Parks Department staff has been researching grant opportunities from a variety of sources and for a variety of purposes in recent months. Many of the grants involve very small funding levels, but some are more substantial. Staff is making the Board aware of the opportunities currently under consideration and is requesting direction or authorization for the Department to pursue the grant opportunities listed below. AT&T Foundation -Request of $5,000. Target Project: Cool Jazz Festival Staff. has contacted the AT&T Foundation to request an application for an Art & Culture Grant. Staff is awaiting the application which will be available in the spring of 2008. USTA Public Facility Funding Grant - <_$50,000.00 or 20% of project. Target Project: OHS Tennis Court resurfacing. Staff is preparing an application to the United States Tennis Association. The funds are being requested to support the tennis court renovations at Orange High School. If successful, the grant funding would be applied equally against Orange County's portion of the costs for the project. Be Active North Carolina, Inc. -Request of $5,000. Target Project: Mid-Day Getaway (lunchtime exercise programs.) 2 Staff is requesting $5,000 to offer a program series that encourages people to be active. Recreation and Parks has offered fee based lunchtime programs targeting County employees in the past. Mixed results have been experienced due to necessary fees charged. The funding would help to reduce fees charged. No other County Department offers a program of this type or name. Triangle Community Foundation -Request for funds (approximately $1,200) to purchase an LCD projector. The projector will be used for training of coaches;, parents and officials. Baseball for Tomorrow Foundation -approximately $50,000 Target Project: Fairview Park Baseball/Softball Field. FINANCIAL IMPACT: No matching funds are required other than those already available within individual project budgets. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board authorize staff to pursue these grant applications.
