Drive to the State road system.

./9. 'The Board will consider a statement to be made before the Department
of Transportation at their public hearing to consider a seven year

On February I
14, 1980, a main section of bleaclaers in the Stanford Junior
High School gymLasium collapsed just prior to the filling of that facility for

an afternoon basketball game. We were very fortunate to escape this situation
with no serious inJuries or deaths.

We immediately called for an examination of the entire bleacher system at
that school by la structural, engineer with the State Division of School Planning
It was revealed that the bleachers are an inferior brand, and the company has
si7nce gone out of business. They were installed in 1969 and structurally over--
hauled in 1914, The engineer concluded that the remaining bleacher sections were
unsafe for fur�her use, and based on that fact we have begun to dismantle a.11
remaining bleacI hers in that gymnasium.
The purpope of this communication is to request an additional appropriation
which would act to amend Category I of our 1979-80 Capital Outlay rand ir. an
amount suffici nt to adequately have replaced the entire bleacher system at
Stanford Junio High School. The replacement involves a bank of bleacher seating
96 ft. long t; extend outward to 23 ft., 7 in. , of a telescopic nature, with
structural capabilities as approved by the State Division of School Planning.
Costs estimates for replacement are approximately $25 per seat, with a total of
bleachers and I installation estimated at $30,000. The appropriation request is,
however, for the actual project cost, with remittance of the appropriation if sa
granted basedion the presentation of an approved invoice to the County Finance
Director in an amount equal to the actual cost of the project. Competitive
bids will be obtained in choosing a contractor for this project.
