Montessori School Application

PURPOSE: To consider scheduling a public hearing for the June 24, 2008 regular meeting to
review the SUP-A-2-08 Farm Montessori School application.
BACKGROUND: This item was originally scheduled for review at the May 19, 2008 Quarterly
Public Hearing, but was pulled from the agenda due to an advertising error. Staff is requesting
that the Board consider scheduling a special public hearing for the June 24, 2008 meeting to
allow for the review of this request to begin.
A. PUBLIC HEARING ITEMS
SUP-A-2-08 Farm Montessori School: REVIEW of a Class A Special Use Permit
(hereafter `SUP) application proposing the development of a private, Montessori, school
facility at 711 Terry Road (SR 1573) (TMBL 5.10..22 /PIN 0806-76-4683). The property
in question is located within the ENO Township, is approximately fourteen and a half (14
'/2) acres in area, and is zoned Agricultural Residential (AR) Lower Eno Protected
Watershed Overlay.
The applicant, Montessori Farm School, is seeking an SUP in accordance with the
provisions of Article Eight (8) and Section 8.8.30 to develop a private school based on the
Montessori curriculum.
The applicant intends to develop their school with a major emphasis on providing a
farm/agricultural and science emphasis including:
a. Farm and crop production,
b. Animal care,
c. Recycling, composting, and water conservation activities/projects.
Pur ose: To receive public comment on the Farm Montessori School Class A Special
Use Permit

Changes may be made in the advertised proposals that reflect debate, objections and discussion
at the hearing.
Accommodations for individuals with physical disabilities can be provided if the request is made
to the Director of Planning at least 48 hours prior to the Public Hearing by calling the appropriate
number listed below. The full text of the changes may be obtained from the Planning
Department. Also,.the text may be obtained at the County website www.co.orange.nc.us at the
Meeting Agendas link prior to the meeting.
Questions regarding the proposals may be directed to the Orange County Planning Department
located in the Planning and Agricultural Center, 306E Revere Road, Hillsborough, North
Carolina. Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. You may also
call 245-2575 or 245-2585 and you will be directed to a staff member who will answer your
questions.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: Other than advertising costs, which are included in the FY 2007-08
Budget, there are no direct financial impacts associated with the approval of this item.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Administration recommends that the Board approve the
proposed Public Hearing legal advertisement.

A joint, public hearing will be held in the Southern Human Services Center, 2501
Homestead Road, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Tuesday June 24, 2008, at 7:30 PM for
the purpose of giving all interested citizens an opportunity to speak for or against the
following items:
