BACKGROUND: The American College of Emergency Physicians(ACEP) has announced that st the 41annual Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week will be celebrated throughout the nation May 17 through 23, 2015, in recognition of the dedicated professionals who provide lifesaving pre-hospital care.National EMSWeek brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicly honor the dedication and commitment of those who are medicine's "front lineresponders". The EMS System in Orange County includes Telecommunicators, Career and Volunteer Fire Departments, Law Enforcement Officers, Paramedics,Emergency Medical Technicians,VolunteerRescue Squad,Johnston Ambulance Service, North State Ambulance Service, Emergency Nurses, Emergency Physicians, Carolina AirCare, County Staff, andthe Universityof North Carolina - Department of Emergency Medicine. The Orange County EMSSystem responded to more than 12,500emergencies last year, providing medical assessment, treatment, and ambulance transportation when medically necessary. County Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians are exceptionally dedicated, incredibly skilled, andprovide an invaluable service to residents, makingOrange County a safer place towork andlive. FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with consideration of this proclamation. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the approve and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation designatingthe week of May 17 through 23, 2015,as Emergency Medical Services Week in Orange County. 2 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS PROCLAMATION EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES WEEK MAY 17-23, 2015 WHEREAS, the Orange County Emergency Medical Services System is a vital public service; and WHEREAS, the members of Orange County Emergency Medical Services team are ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seve WHEREAS, access to quality pre-hospital emergency care dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illnesy; and WHEREAS, the Orange County Emergency Medical Services system consists of emergency physicians, emergency nurses, emergency medical techni firefighters, telecommunicators, educators, administrators and others; and WHEREAS, the members of Emergency Medical Services teams, whethe volunteer, engage in thousands of hours of specialized training education to enhance their lifesaving skills; and WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize the value and the accompents of Emergency Medical Services providers by designating Emergency Medical Services Week; NOW THEREFORE we, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners, in recognition of this event, do hereby proclaim the week of May 17-23, 2015, as EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES WEEK, with the theme of EMS STRONG, by officially recognizing and appreciating the Emergency Medical Services Providers that serve our community. th This the 19 day of May, 2015. _________________________________ Earl McKee, Chair Orange County Board of Commissioners
