PURPOSE: To receive a special presentation of artwork displayed at a recent Durham County
celebration of the acquisition of property for the New Hope Preserve.
BACKGROUND: On April 8, the Durham County Board of Commissioners held a celebration in
Durham to commemorate the acquisition of 43 acres for the New Hope Preserve. This property
was acquired from Duke University and straddles the Durham-Orange county line. The 11-acre
portion in Orange County will be deeded to Orange County. Durham County and the Town of
Chapel Hill will also own portions of the land.
This land is part of a larger 72-acre area that connects Duke Forest and Erwin Road to open
space in Durham County. A master plan for a portion of the site -which includes the 43 acres
acquired on April 8 - is currently underway.
As part of the April 8 event, artwork depicting a scene along New Hope Creek was displayed.
The artwork will be displayed as part of this presentation.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with this presentation.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the presentation.
