PURPOSE:
To officially recognize Public Health Month during the month of April,
1994.
BACKGROUND:
The report on the Future of Public Health by the Institute of Medicine,
redefines public health as, "What we as a society, do collectively to
assure the conditions in which people can be healthy. "
In order to inform the public of the achievements in public health, to
help our citizens to gain a greater understanding of public health
services and to urge a strong commitment to healthy living, Public Health
Month has been established for state wide observance during the month of
April 1994 . The Health Department has decided to focus the month of
April in preparation for National Preschool Immunization Week, April 24 -
April 30, 1994.
The department is working in collaboration with the Orange County
Coalition for Immunizations, which involves the Cooperative Extension
Service, Orange Chatham Comprehensive Health Services, the Kiwanis Club
and other agencies in the community. Immunization Clinic times are being
expanded and a major effort to inform, recruit and even transport
children ages 0-2 years old and their parents for free immunizations at
multiple locations in the county.
RECOMMENDATIONS(S) Proclaim Public Health Month during the month of
April, 1994.

PROCLAMATION FROM THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
WHEREAS, The State of North Carolina has adopted the month of April,
1994, as Public Health Month in North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, The public health facilities in Orange County serve
thousands our citizens each year; and
WHEREAS, Public health assures a clean, safer, more wholesome
environment in.which to live; and
WHEREAS, Healthful living is the major prevention of the financial
burdens of disease and chronic illness; and
WHEREAS, Concerned, informed and active citizens will ensure a
healthy future for Orange County;
THEREFORE, We hereby proclaim April, 1994, as PUBLIC HEALTH MONTH in
Orange County, with the theme "Healthy Living. "
