Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
Interested in the experiences of people with varying cultural backgrounds from a young age, I
have a particular sensitivity and awareness of how systemic habits can marginilize those who
are vulnerable. I studied Political Science, US History and completed a semester Urban Studies
program in Chicago that gave the opportunity to meet with different constituents and hear their
unique concerns. I went on to complete a Masters in African American History at the University
of Illinois- Chicago. I have also worked with ethnically and economically diverse populations as
an employee in Planned Parenthood clinics, a public librarian, and now as a Human Services
Specialist with DSS. I am particularly interested in protecting the most vulnerable in our
communities and creating service environments that welcome those who may have intersecting
identities such as gender variance and poverty, or disability and ethnic minority status. How can
we create spaces that make all feel seen, heard, valued? I can bring my passion, energy,
compassion, and communication skills.

Affordable Housing Advisory Board
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
During my undergraduate coursework I served in both the United States Senate and Utah State
House of Representatives where issues of Human Services and Public Welfare were prominent
in legislation and committee meetings of various types. During law school at, North Carolina
Central University, public service and social equity were essential components of the case
studies and course work required. During each of these experiences I have seen the impact of
the economic stress families face in communities around our State and Nation. Additionally, I
have worked for more than 10 years with the Orange County Child Support Enforcement Agency
as a legal intern and now as one of their attorneys where we deal with the impact of increasing
housing costs (both from rent/mortgage costs and utility payments) on both sides of fractured
family units. These experiences provide perspective and knowledge which combine real world
problems with academic policy concerns.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
I believe that housing costs are something that the members of our County share as a challenge
of one degree or another. As costs continue to rise, it is important that families of all income
levels be welcomed to our community and that housing options be available to serve families of
diverse backgrounds and economic statuses. I hope that by service on this advisory board I
would be able to provide clear perspectives and information that help our County provide
13

essential resources to community members who will provide, preserve or create affordable
housing options and provide members of our community with information and tools to maintain
affordable housing in our growing communities

I served in Orange County as an affordable housing advocate for over 2 years. I helped

helped start an initiative to catalog and organize a database of affordable housing in the
county, and became very familiar with the options in Orange as well as the unmet needs.
I also volunteer as a youth soccer coach in Chapel Hill.
