PURPOSE: To consider awarding a bid to upgrade the IBM RISC 6000 Model
530H in Data Processing to a Model 590H.
BACKGROUND: On June 5 and August 22 , 1995, the Board received reports
from staff on the County' s automation plan. One aspect of this plan is
the proposal to upgrade the County' s IBM RISC 6000 Model 530H client-
server to a Model 590H. This upgrade would roughly quadruple the
internal processor speed and double the disk size. In practical terms,
it would allow the Data Processing staff to move all mainframe
applications that still reside on the McDonnell-Douglas M9255 over to
the RISC 6000 . All County client-server applications would then be run
on the RISC 6000, and the County could discontinue use and maintenance
of the McDonnell-Douglas.
Following the August 22 report and development of specifications by
County Staff, bids were solicited from seven vendors . Two bidders
responded. IBM of Raleigh, North Carolina submitted the lowest
responsible bid at a cost delivered and installed of $47, 537 .20 .
A tabulation of the bids is included. Sufficient funds have been
included in the 1995-96 Data Processing budget to accomplish the
outright purchase of this upgrade.
RECOMMENDATION: The Manager recommends award of the bid to IBM of
Raleigh, North Carolina for a total cost of $47 , 537.20 to upgrade the
IBM RISC 6000 Model 530H in Data Processing to a Model 590H.
