THIS AGREEMENT, entered into this 18th day of December, 2014, by and between Orange-
County ("County"), by and through the Orange County Arts Commission ("Arts Commission")
and Triangle Youth Ballet("Grant Recipient").
WHEREAS, the Arts Commission is a countywide arts agency that ensures the growth of
local arts experiences by providing funding and support for diverse high quality programs and
projects.
WHEREAS, the Arts Commission administers the Spring and Fall Arts Grants Program
to provide economic opportunities to Orange County artists and non-profit organizations
coordinating arts projects benefiting the citizens of Orange County.
WHEREAS, the Spring Arts Grants Program is supported by Arts Commission with
funds from the Grassroots Program of the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency of the
Department of Cultural Resources and the National Endowment for the Arts.
WHEREAS, the Grant Recipient was selected by the Arts Commission to receive the
Spring Arts Grant through the procedures duly adopted by the Arts Commission; and
WHEREAS, both parties wish to promote and maintain the integrity and clarity of the
Grant Recipient's ideas and statements and delineate the Grant Recipient's obligations to the
County;
NOW, THEREFORE, the County and the Grant Recipient, for the consideration and
under the conditions hereinafter set forth, agree as follows:
1. Approved Grant Project. Grant funds are provided under this Agreement for the project
("Project") described in the Grant Recipient's Grant Application, attached hereto and
incorporated herein as Exhibit A.
2. Grant Award. Grant funds in an amount not to exceed one thousand four hundred thirty
dollars ($1,430) have been awarded by the Arts Commission to the Grant Recipient for
the approved Project. These funds must be matched at least dollar-for-dollar with cash
from the Grant Recipient's funds not derived from either Orange County appropriations
or the North Carolina Arts Council.
3. Contingency. This grant is contingent on North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots
Program funding to the Arts Commission. Final decisions on Grassroots Program funds
to the North Carolina Arts Council are subject to approval by the North Carolina General
Assembly.
4. Responsibilities of the Grant Recipient

A. Implementation. The Project implementation shall take place between January 1,
2015 and December 31, 2015. The Project shall be implemented in the manner
described in Exhibit A. Time is of the essence in the implementation of the
Proj ect.
B. Modifications to project. Grant Recipient shall present major changes to the
original proposal, including but not limited to changes in design, implementation
schedule and increase in Project budget by more than 10%, in writing to the Arts
Commission for approval. Arts Commission shall approve or disapprove Grant
Recipient's request for modifications within seven (7) days of receipt thereof.
Consent to project modifications shall not be unreasonably withheld. Arts
Commission's decisions shall be in writing. In the event the Arts Commission
fails to approve or disapprove the requested modifications within the time stated
herein,the modifications shall be deemed approved.
C. Non—assignment. The grant cannot be assigned or transferred to a different project
or artist without prior written approval of the Arts Commission.
D. Records. Grant Recipient must maintain records and other evidence pertaining
to costs incurred and revenues acquired during the Project implementation. Grant
Recipient shall maintain financial records pertaining to the Project for three (3)
years from the date of this Agreement, in case of audit.
E. Use of Funds. Grant Recipient shall not use the grant funds to repay outstanding
taxes or other debts of any nature. The grants shall be utilized solely for the
purpose of implementing the Project and Project related expenses.
F. Final Report. Grant Recipient shall submit to the Arts Commission a Final Report
on January 15, 2016 . The Final Report shall be in the format required by
the North Carolina Arts Council. Failure to submit the Final Report or late
submission of the Final Report, for any reason, shall be grounds for denial and/or
cancellation of grant funds for the Project and future grant proposals.
5. Responsibilities of the Arts Commission
A. Pam. The Arts Commission shall release the grant funds in the amount of
$1,430 to the Grant Recipient.
6. Publicity
A. Acknowled eg ment. Credit must be given to the Orange County Arts
Commission using the Arts Commission logo and if State funds are received
to the North Carolina Grassroots Program in brochures, news releases,
programs, and all other printed and online publications. Copies of such printed
materials must accompany the evaluation report. When no printed information is
used, verbal credit shall be given. In addition, all print and promotional material
must include the following credit line (check all that apply):

i. x County Funds Only. "This program is supported by the Orange County
Arts Commission. "
ii. North Carolina Arts Council Funding. "This program is supported by
the Orange County Arts Commission with funds from the Grassroots Program
of the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency. "
B. The Grant Recipient must enter all events,'exhibits and performances open to the
public and related to this grant award on the ExploreChapelHillARTS.com
website and display ExploreChape1Hi11ARTS.com publicity materials
(postcards, brochures, etc.) prominently and consistently at their venue or
performance space. In addition, the Grant Recipient must add a link to the
ExploreChapelHillARTS.com (ExploreChapelHillARTS.com logo preferred)
to their main webpage. The Grant Recipient shall contact the Orange County Arts
Commission for replacement ExploreChapelHillARTS.com publicity materials.
7. Indemnity. The Grant Recipient agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the County, the
Arts Commission and the North Carolina Arts Council and their officers and employees
from any and all claims or actual injury, damage or loss to a person, or real or personal
property that results from or is in any way connected to the use of the grant funds.
8. Independent Contractor. The Grant Recipient is an independent contractor and not an
employee, agent or other representative of the County and/or the Arts Commission.
Nothing contained in this Agreement shall be construed to create the relationship of
principal and agent, or employer and employee, between Grant Recipient and Arts
Commission or Orange County Government. Grant Recipient understands and agrees
that he/she is not authorized to incur any expenses or any liability whatsoever on behalf
of the County or the Arts Commission and has no authority, expressed or implied, to
obligate or make representations on behalf of the County or the Arts Commission. In
addition, Grant Recipient agrees to maintain his or her own worker's compensation
insurance for himself/herself and his or her employees for the duration of the art work's
installation.
9. Termination
A. In the event of any of the circumstances set forth below(hereinafter referred to as
"default"),the Arts Commission may immediately terminate this Agreement:
(i) Any fraudulent representation in any verification required to obtain
payment under this Agreement or other dishonesty on a material matter
relating to the performance of services under this Agreement.
(ii) Nonperformance, incomplete service or performance, or , failure to
satisfactorily perform any part of the Project or to comply with any
provision of this Agreement, as determined by the Arts Commission in its
sole discretion.

(iii) Failure to adhere to the terms of applicable county, state or federal laws,
regulations, or stated public policy.
B. In the event of default by the Grant Recipient, the Arts Commission has the
discretion to elect to terminate this Agreement, in whole or in part and/or require
the Grant Recipient to repay the grant funds within seven (7) from written notice
of default or allow the grant recipient the opportunity to cure the default. This
clause shall not be interpreted to limit the County's or the Arts Commission's
remedies in law or in equity.
10. Miscellaneous.
A. Entire Agreement. This Agreement and the attachments contain the final and
entire understanding of the parties with respect to the subject matter of this
Agreement. All modifications and amendments to this Agreement shall be in
writing. This Agreement shall be binding upon the parties, their heirs, successors
and assigns.
B. Governing Law. This Agreement shall be interpreted in accordance with the laws
of the State of North Carolina and the Orange County.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, the Orange County and the Grant Recipient have signed this Grant
Agreement, effective on the last date this Agreement is signed by both parties as indicated by the
dates set forth under signatures below.

1. ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE
MISSION Triangle Youth Ballet's mission is to train dancers and to instill a deeper understanding of
dance arts in its community. It pledges to offer professional training to aspiring dancers through classes,
training workshops and performance opportunities. Through the operation of its repertory ballet
company, TYB provides professional performance experience and community outreach programs.
HISTORY The Triangle Youth Ballet(TYB)was founded in 1995 to serve as a professional dance
performance entity for Triangle area youth. TYB produced annual performances of The Nutcracker until
2004,when it expanded its mission and incorporated as a school of professional dance education for
youth and adults. TYB has worked with thousands of young dancers since its inception in 1995,and
currently has approximately 200 children and adults enrolled in its school. Many of TYB alumni have
gone on to train at esteemed dance companies across the country, including Philadanco and The Joffrey
Ballet. Producing three performances a year,TYB has expanded its repertory to include the ballets of La
Fille Mal Gardee,Dracula,Clowning Around,and The Sleeping Beauty,and its annual production of The
Nutcracker.
In addition to providing quality dance training and performance opportunities or young dancers,TYB has
always been dedicated to community outreach. Recognizing that the art of dance is a medium for
communication that transcends social and economic boundaries,TYB was, in part,founded on the
premise that dance's impact stretches beyond the proscenium stage. Therefore,TYB has participated in
several community based projects that have raised funds for area service organizations, such as the
American Red Cross. In an effort to engage populations that otherwise might not have access to or be
inclined to attend a ballet,TYB has given several performances before special needs populations from
The Arc of Orange and Durham Counties,the Ronald McDonald House, and The Masonic Home for
Children,among others. TYB also collaborates with area schools, giving lecture demonstrations that
incorporate arts learning in traditional core subject instruction,while also exposing young children to
classical dance.

III.PROPOSED USES OF GRANT FUNDS
The Triangle Youth Ballet has remained steadfast in its commitment to making ballets arts accessible to
everyone in the community since its inception in 1995. Each year during its annual production of The
Nutcracker,TYB has produced additional performances targeted towards special needs populations.
TYB believes that the arts are for everyone and one's mental,physical and/or financial status should have
no bearing on their ability to engage in quality,professional arts experiences.To address the barriers that
may prevent special needs persons from participating in the arts,TYB opens its dress rehearsals before

the opening night of its Chapel Hill High School and Carolina Theatre performance series to special needs
audience-goers. The 2015 season will mark the 18a'year of The Nutcracker special needs concert
program.
TYB defines"special needs"as those who have mental and/or physical developmental disabilities as well
as those who face financial hardship. TYB's community outreach director contacts more than 50 schools,
youth homes, senior centers,rehabilitation centers, and community based organizations in the Triangle in
an effort to generate awareness and make this performance available to as many special needs people as
possible. Triangle Youth Ballet offers a block of tickets to these free performances to organizations that
work directly with the special needs populations. A representative from each organization must reserve
their passes online and pick them up from will-call the day of the performance with their group. Though
the show is a dress rehearsal, it is still presented at its highest quality and gives the audience the full
Nutcracker experience. The dancers are in full costume,the Tchaikovsky Virtuosi orchestra performs
live,and the sets,props, and lighting that make the ballet come to life are in place.
Because TYB recognizes that some people with mental and developmental challenges may require
frequent assistance throughout a live performance,it may be difficult for them to attend a traditional
theater production.To accommodate the needs of this audience TYB arranges to have additional ushers to
assist with seating. Some seats are removed to provide additional space for those who are in wheelchairs.
A special program is designed which includes enlarged font size to accommodate those who are visually
impaired,as well as an autograph section for the post-performance meet-and-greet between the cast and
the audience members.The post-performance meet-and-greet is always met with great enthusiasm by
both the audience and cast.Additionally,because the cast primarily comprised of youth ages 7-18,they
are provided instructions on sensitivity and how to approach and start conversations with the special
needs population,especially those with mental or developmental challenges.
ARTISTS
Dancers-Under the artistic direction of Lauren Lorentz de Haas The Nutcracker cast is made up of 100
performers from Orange and Durham counties. In August of each year,dancers are invited to audition for
the show. The dancers are between the ages of 8 and 18 and come from at least six area dance schools.
The Nutcracker performance group casts a senior(ages 12-18)and junior(ages 11+)company. This
distinction helps determine performance roles,with leading roles, such as the Sugar Plum Fair and Snow
Queen,given to members of the senior company. In addition to the young dancers, adult community
members have the opportunity to perform in supporting roles such as revelers and maids. These
performers are dancers and non-dancers and add to the diversification of the cast in terms of age and
performance experience.
Musicians—The Tchaikovsky Virtuosi,led by conductor Andrew McAfee,is a 34-piece orchestra
composed of music students at UNC-Chapel Hill and other local musicians who are looking for
professional performance opportunities. The 2015 season will be Tchaikovsky Virtuosi's 8a'year
performing live with the Triangle Youth Ballet.

AUDIENCE Triangle Youth Ballet is in its early stages of tracking audience demographic information.
The first ever audience survey was distributed during the October 2012 performance of Giselle at Chapel
Hill High School. The survey tool was designed to collect information about the race,age, education,and
geographic location of audience members, as well as whether or not they were new or returning patrons of
TYB and what marketing tool drew them to attend the ballet(i.e. email blast,word-of-mouth,etc.).
Because the marketing approach for Giselle is comparable to that of The Nutcracker,the data collected
for Giselle serves as the baseline until additional demographic information is collected at future
performances. Our baseline tells us that our core audience is largely comprised of women between the
ages of 36 and 55,highly educated,white/European descent,and predominately from Chapel Hill.
However, about 30%of the audience is from Durham with the remaining coming from other counties
including Wake,Chatham and Cabarrus.

While we have established a baseline for our core audience,we have not collected demographic
information at the special needs performances in previous years. We will begin that process during the
2015 season. However,we can anecdotally report that,historically,this audience tends to be more
diverse with respect to physical ability,race,and socioeconomic status,with the majority of attendees
from Orange and Durham counties. Our community outreach director contacts more than 50 schools,
youth homes, senior centers,rehabilitation centers,and community based organizations in the Triangle in
an effort to generate awareness and make this performance available to as many special needs people as
possible.As stated earlier,each special needs show is performed before an audience of approximately 450
people,and we hope to see this number increase in up and coming years as we begin to scale up our
outreach efforts.

Artists Biographies
Lauren Lorentz de Haas,Artistic Director
A North Carolina native,began her training in Fayetteville with Josephine von Strasnicsak. She
studied ballet at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, VA and North Carolina School of the
Arts. An anthropology graduate of UNC, she received her MA in dance from UNC-Greensboro
with recognized credits from American Dance Festival. Ms. Lorentz de Haas has been teaching
ballet for over 35 years. She founded the Triangle Youth Ballet to serve the needs of young
aspiring dancers and has served as director since 1995. This season marks the 20th anniversary
of the Triangle Youth Ballet's Nutcracker, choreographed by Ms. Lorentz de Haas.
In 2003,the school of the Triangle Youth Ballet was opened. In 2004, under her direction,
the performing company was accepted into the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association and.
Regional Dance America.
Ms. Lorentz de flaas has choreographed Peter and the Wolf, Carnival of the Animals and Bug
Songs for the NC Symphony. A full length Dracula, also choreographed by Ms. Lorentz de Haas
has been in the TYB repertory since 2005.
Andrew M. McAfee, Conductor
After playing Principal Horn with the North Carolina Symphony for 15 years (1992-2007),
Andrew McAfee now focuses on mentoring through teaching horn at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), conducting as the Music Director/Conductor of the Triangle
Youth Ballet and the Masterworks Reading Orchestra(www.masterworksro.com).
Mr. McAfee completed his Bachelor of Music in Performance at Northwestern University and
has won national auditions for positions with the Fresno Philharmonic,Honolulu Symphony,
Columbus Symphony,New Mexico Symphony and the North Carolina Symphony g
Orchestras. He studied conducting for 9,summers with Maestro Harold Farberman at the
Conductor's Institute and then with Maestro Ransom Wilson at the University of North Carolina
School of the Arts where he completed his Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting. As Music
Director/Conductor of the Triangle Youth Ballet in Chapel Hill, Mr. McAfee has conducted
full orchestral productions of Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty in May 2008 and March 2009, The
Nutcracker eves year since December 2008, and Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf in April
2012. His website, hornlessons.org, features his CD "A Passionate Horn,"horn technique
videos, and his horn book titled "The McAfee Method."

Triangle Youth Ballet 2015 Nutcracker Artist Contact List
The Triangle Youth Ballet casts it Nutcracker production via an annual audition process in August of each
year. The cast for the 2015 production will not be known until that time. However,the main company
will be comprised of dancers between the ages of 7 and 18 years of age. Minimal/non-dancing roles,such
as "party parents"will be filled by community members who usually range in age from 18+years old.
Many of these individuals are former dancers and family/friends of company members.

Triangle Youth Ballet Staff Roster 2014-2015
Lauren Lorentz de Haas,Artistic Director Lauren, a North Carolina native, began her training in
Fayetteville with Josephine von Strasnicsak. She studied ballet with Constance Hardinge at Virginia
Intermont College in Bristol, VA and North Carolina School of the Arts. An anthropology graduate of UNC,
she received her MA in dance from UNC-Greensboro with recognized credits from American Dance
Festival. Ms. Lorentz de Haas has been teaching ballet for over 35 years. She founded the Triangle Youth
Ballet to serve the needs of young aspiring dancers and has served as director since 1995.
Sharon McClellan,Director of Children's Curriculum Sharon studied Ballet and Musical Theater at
Jacksonville University, Children's Theater and Choreography at the University of Kansas and South Indian
Classical Dance at the University of Washington. Performed and choreographed for Dansync Performing
Arts Ensemble. She has taught continuously in the area for 25 years.
Christiana Barnett-Murphy,Facilitates our partnership with the Durham Arts Council
Christiana has been a part of the Triangle Youth Ballet family since 2002. She began dancing professionally
while in high school with 2 Near the Edge Dance Company in the ongoing production"Night of Renewal",
which was performed throughout the North Carolina region including First Night Raleigh, Duke University,
and The University of North Carolina. She also has performed with the Duke Repertory Company in works
by Andrea E. Woods and Ava Lavonne Vinesett and with Dendy Dance Theater at the grand re-opening of
the North Carolina Museum of Art. Christiana has attended the American Dance Festival for six summers
and has had the opportunity to learn from and perform with some of the best in Modern dance. During the
summer of 2012, Christiana was the personal assistant to ADF faculty member, Jesse Zaritt. She is currently
a company member of Andrea E. Woods/SOULOWORKS and works as a freelance dancer, choreographer
and teacher.
William Commander,Faculty and Guest Artist William a dancer,teacher, and choreographer based in
Durham,North Carolina. William graduated from Elon University in 2011, where he earned a BFA in Dance
Performance and Choreography. In 2013,he, along with Stephanie Blackmon Woodbeck, started Tobacco
Road Dance Productions,with the goal of helping North Carolina choreographers create and improve dance
in this incredible state.He currently teaches at the ADF's Samuel H. Scripps studios and Triangle Youth
Ballet,and dances for Renay Aumiller Dances, VECTOR-a dance and multimedia company-Diego Carraso
Dance, and Sara Tourek. In the past, William has worked with Lauren Kearns, Gaspard Louis,Adrienne
Clancy, Jon Lehrer, and Killian Manning. William believes strongly in artistic collaboration, and is
constantly striving to improve those around him as much as himself.
Kate Currin,Registrar, Faculty and Community Outreach Director Kate is a graduate from the Walnut
Hill School of Performing Arts with a major in Dance. Kate studied at Fordham University in the
Fordham/Alvin Ailey B.F.A. dance program. She continued her dance training at Steps on Broadway and
graduated from Fordham University summa cum laude with a B.A. in Religious Studies in 2007. She has
performed with Sweet Enuff Dancers and Jette Performance Company in New York, and was a member of
Sidelong Dance Co. 2008-2009. Kate's choreography has been performed by Sidelong Dance Co. and was
selected to appear at the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association Festival in May 2009. She taught Ballet
and Jazz at Dance Cavise in Mamaroneck,NY throughout college and is currently teaching in Chapel Hill,
NC at the Triangle Youth Ballet. As of May 2009, Kate is the newest member of world-renowned acrobatic
dance company Galumpha.

Brittany Jackson,Faculty Originally from Ohio,Brittany has danced,taught, and choreographed all over
the country since graduating from Denison University with her BA in Dance and BA in English Literature in
2009.After some time in New York City,Brittany moved to Culver, Indiana to teach dance at Culver
Academies. From there, she moved to Chatham,Virginia where as Director of Dance she taught ballet,
contemporary, improvisation, and choreography in addition to choreographing and producing shows, living
on campus, and immersing herself in the boarding school life. Brittany began her training with Nan Klinger
through the Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet and has danced at Chautauqua Institution,Pacific Northwest
Ballet,Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Joe Goode Performance Group, CityDance, and many others. She is
thrilled to be working with the wonderful students at TYB!
Hannah Widener,Assistant to Children's Curriculum Director and Production Stage Manager
Hannah received her BFA in dance with a minor in English from UNC-Greensboro in 1994. She has
performed in modern dance companies: Dansync,A Performing Arts Ensemble, and North/South Dance of
NYC. Her teaching experiences include teaching children's classes in ballet,jazz,tap, creative movement,
and modern dance. She has also taught ballroom dance to adults.
Alexandra Weber,Facilitates our partnership with the The Carrboro ArtsCenter Alexandra began her
dance training in San Antonio, Texas at Earle Cobb Dance Studio and has traveled to many studios to expand
her experience. She has worked with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and performed at the Spurs half time
show. She brings her background of technique together with drill team experiences to create a unique
choreography. Full of energy and with a love of working with children we are excited for her to join our
team. Allie begins this fall directing our new program with the Carrboro ArtsCenter. There she will be
adding our young dancer's curriculum to the Saturday morning schedule at the ArtsCenter.
Alice Yu, Stage One Faculty and Guest Artist Alice started traditional Chinese dance at age three with her
mother and switched to classical ballet at age eleven with the Pittsburgh Youth Ballet.Alice moved to
Chapel Hill in 2009 and is now an alum of the Triangle Youth Ballet Performing Company. She has
performed lead roles in The Nutcracker and Giselle. She is the awardee of the 2013 TYB Suzi Wagner
Award. Alice is currently a Biology Major, Chemistry Minor, and Music Minor at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill.
