BACKGROUND: The North Carolina Governor's Award Program has existed since 1979. This award program, which is sponsored by the Governor's Office, showcases North Carolina's most outstanding volunteers. Through the years, North Carolinians have proven their concern and compassion for their neighbors by volunteering in their local communities. Each North Carolina County selects five individuals, businesses, and/or groups to be recognized for their outstanding contributions to their communities. One of the five recipients will be nominated to receive the NC Outstanding Volunteer Medallion.. Orange County will have recognized these volunteers by having a "meet and greet" reception before this regularly scheduled Board of County Commissioners meeting (March 6, 2008 from 6:30-7:30p.m. in the Jury Room at the F. Gordon Battle Courtroom), and by further honoring them at this meeting with certificates from both the County and the State. The Five Governor's Award winners will be recognized and a short biography of their volunteer service will be presented; then the 7 Orange County Key Volunteers (6 individuals and 1 couple) will be recognized and a short biography of their volunteer service will be read. The Clerk's Office will provide the volunteers with videos of their volunteer recognition the following week. .FINANCIAL IMPACT: The Key Volunteer Event was budgeted in the 2007-08 BOCC approved budget under "Volunteer Recognitions". RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board recognize the outstanding Key volunteers in 2007 and, request that the Clerk's Office provide videotape recordings to the recipients the following week. Key Volunteers And North Carolina Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service Orange County Recipients for 2007 Each year Orange County recognizes its most outstanding community volunteers. The process begins in the late fall when the Planning Committee for the Annual Orange County Key Volunteer Awards Program sends out nomination forms to the non-profit and governmental human services agencies in Orange County. Agencies are asked to nominate an Individual, Group or Business for their outstanding service. All the volunteers nominated are recognized as "Orange County Key Volunteers." Out of those nominated, five volunteers (individuals and groups) are selected by a panel of judges as Orange County recipients of'the N.C. Outstanding Volunteer Awards, formerly the "Governor's Awards Orange County Recipients for 2007 WINNERS OF THE 2007 N.C. GOVERNOR'S AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER SERVICE The five North Carolina Award winners are: Ana Prothro (Medallion Duke Hospice Ana is truly an advocate for her Winner) hospice patients and is committed to providing that extra bit of caring that makes such a difference in her . patients lives. She is a committed volunteer and she brings that commitment to those in need includin the Latino communit . Carol Gunn Orange County Animal Carol has volunteered at the shelter Services for over 3 years and is dedicated to walking the shelter's dogs, no matter what. She has a heart of gold and is not only dedicated to the shelter pets, but is supportive of all of the em to ees as well. JoAnn Pitz Duke Hospice JoAnn has been a Duke Hospice volunteer since 2003 and has consistently and faithfully served her patients, especially with the volunteer activity audits. She is truly a woman of intelligence, strength and heart. John Mathivet Orange County Habitat for John has volunteered diligently for Humanity the past 2 years with Habitat and his attention to detail with the homes and his desire to produce a quality home has not gone unnoticed, by both staff and new homeowners. He does a great job! 2007 Orange County Key Volunteer Awards Reception, Chair's Script Page 2 of 3 Berneta Lemon Orange County Disability Since 1983, Ms. Lemon has used Awareness Council her singing and musical talent to reach out to the disabled community. She is accomplished in many areas, despite many obstacles. Her music touches lives, both emotionally and s irituall . 2®®7 ®F~ANC ~ C®LJN'Y"Y IfCEY ~l®~UN'~"E~~ ~ERV~GE A'WAFt®~ -- KEY VOLUNTEERS WINNERS Hillary Cooper Orange County Animal Hillary has faithfully volunteered at Services the Animal Shelter for 2'/2 years while attending UNC and was one of the first volunteers to do community outreach at the shelter. She is dedicated to this organization and is truly a role model for other young adults in colle a toda . John and Marie Helton Orange County Animal John and Marie work as a team in Services their dedication to improve the lives of people and pets. They are invaluable in assisting in the temperament testing of animals and assisting with photographing of the animals for the shelter in order for the ublic to see them. Barbara Long Orange County Animal Barbara has been volunteering since Services 2004 at the shelter and is the volunteer Animal Behaviorist at the shelter. She believes that animals are an important part of our lives and can be our wonderful friends, too. Angela Moore Orange County Disability Ms. Moore has been the Newsletter Awareness Council Coordinator for DAC (Disability Awareness Council) and has served on their board. She is a role model for other persons with disabilities who struggle for inclusion and inde endence. 2007 Orange County Key Volunteer Awards Reception, Chair's Script Page 3 of 3 Kaili Mumme Orange County Animal Kailie has volunteered at the shelter Services for 2 years, while attending college; her primary role at the shelter has been in educational presentations to the local public schools - to encourage volunteerism at the shelter and communit involvement. John Sehon Orange County Habitat for John joined the Habitat Board in Humanity 2001 and has faithfully served as a volunteer both on the board and "with a hammer" ever since, accepting challenges and providing exem la volunteer service. Christine Tashjian Orange County Rape Crisis Christine implemented Horticultural Center Therapy into the Center's support group and co-facilitated the group using horticultural therapy and nature as a healing tool. She is an outstanding volunteer for the Center
