PURPOSE :
- To recognize August 26 , 1995 as the 75th Anniversary of
ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U . S . Constitution
giving women the right to vote .
- To recognize the importance of this day by inviting corimuriity
participation.
- To demonstrate the Orange County Commissioners ' support of
equality for women in Orange County.
BACKGROUND:
August 26 , 1995 celebrates the 75th anniversary of the woman
suffrage movement ' s greatest victory: ratification of the 19th
Amendment to the U.S . Constitution giving women the right to
vote .
RECOMMENDATION( S ) :
That the Orange County Commissioners proclaim August 26 , 1995
as Women' s Equality Day in Orange County.

ACTIVITIES FOR WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY - AUGUST 26, 1995
1 . A proclamation of Women ' s Equality Day will be presented
to the Orange County Board of Commissioners on Thursday ,
August ??ncl, at 7 : �6 p.m. , at the OWASA Conference Room
in Carrboro .
2 . Rep. Anne Barnes will be the featured speaker at an
evening program and reception celebrating the 75th
Anniversary of Women ' s Suffrage sponsored by the
Commission for Women on Thursday, August -24 , at 7pm at the
Government Services Center in Hillsborough . The public is
invited to attend.
Displays will be set up at the Orange County and Chapel
Hill public libraries including a photographic history of
the women ' s suffrage movement in the United States .

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, August 26 , 1995 , marks the 75th anniversary of the
woman suffrage movement ' s greatest victory: ratification
of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United
States; and
WHEREAS, the amendment reads as follows :
"The right of citizens of the Unites States to vote
shall not be denied or abridged by the United States
or by any state on account of sex. " ; and
WHEREAS, the Orange County Commission for Women advises the
citizens and the Board of Commissioners of Orange County of
the status of women in Orange County; and
WHEREAS, that status continues to be unequal , especially
economically and politically;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Orange County Board of Commissioners
hereby proclaims Saturday, August 26 , 1995, as
WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY
in commemoration of the suffrage victory and as a reminder of
women' s continuing efforts towards equality, and hereby urges
all citizens to exercise their right to vote and continue to
work to guarantee full equality for all women.
