ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Proclamation Recognizing the
Twenty-Five Year Anniversary of Orange County's Curbside Recycling
WHEREAS, Orange County, North Carolina and its municipalities have achieved the highest
waste reduction rate in North Carolina for the past four years including a rate of 58% last year;
and
WHEREAS, Orange County and its municipalities have set the highest waste reduction goal in
the state at 61% per capita; and
WHEREAS, Orange County is recognized internationally for its recycling and waste reduction
programs; and
WHEREAS, Orange County has the highest electronics recycling rate per person in North
Carolina; and
WHEREAS, Orange County and its municipalities have consistently and strongly supported
waste reduction and recycling since 1987; and
WHEREAS, the Towns of Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough were among the first in North
Carolina to have comprehensive curbside recycling for all residences; and
WHEREAS, all multifamily units and two-thirds of rural households now have on-site access to
recycling; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Carrboro, Town of Chapel Hill,Town of Hillsborough and Orange County
have worked cooperatively for more than twenty-five years to achieve superior recycling and
waste reduction program success;
NOW THEREFORE be it proclaimed that in recognition of America Recycles Day (November 15,
2014), Orange County celebrates twenty-five years since beginning its comprehensive urban
curbside recycling programs and initiation of the many other programs that now constitute its
successful and renowned recycling and waste reduction efforts.
