PURPOSE: To proclaim May 14 - 20, 1995 National Historic Preservation Week.
BACKGROUND: This year,National Historic Preservation Week will be observed May 14-20. The
theme chosen by the National Trust for Historic Preservation is "Real People,
Real Places;Real History." A copy of the proclamation is attached.
To publicize Historic Preservation Week, The News of Orange County is
publishing captioned photographs of historic sites from the County's historic
architectural inventory. These will appear in each weekly issue throughout the
month of May Also, the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission has
incorporated the"Real People,Real Places,Reel History"theme into their notices
of community meetings for the Historic Preservation Element of the
Comprehensive Plan, held May 2-4.
RECOMMENDATION: The Administration recommends approval of the proclamation for
National Historic Preservation Week 1995.

WHEREAS, historic preservation is an effective tool for managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods,
fostering local pride and maintaining community character while enhancing livability; and
WIaLEREAS,historic preservation is relevant for communities across the nation,both urban and rural,and
for Americans of all ages, all walks of life and all ethnic backgrounds; and
KREAS, it is important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by
dedicated individuals in helping to preserve the tangible aspects of the heritage that has shaped us as a
people; and
WHEREAS, Orange County is committed to preserving its historic architectural and archeological
resources for its citizens and future generations; and
WHEREAS,"Real People,Real Places,Real History'is the theme for National Historic Preservation Week
1995, consponsored by the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission and the National Trust for
Historic Preservation:
NOW, TRERSFORK, the Orange County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim
May 14-20, 1995, as National Historic Preservation Week
in celebration of the cultural heritage of Orange County and hereby urges all citizens to
support historic preservation efforts.
