Worked in 1980s with Owensboro Daviess County (KY) Tourism Commission to create the IBMA World of Bluegrass events which moved to Raleigh in 2013. Director of Marketing and Sponsorship for MerleFest at Wilkes Community College, building MerleFest into an international brand and an event generating $16M in local economic impact. In that role worked closely with the North Wilkesboro TDA and served on the Tourism Committee of the Wilkes Chamber of Commerce. I was on the Wilkes County Cultural Council for the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area during the time of its creation and launch. I was the college s representative to High Country Host and Advantage West NC. Through those roles I took the National Park Service s intensive Gateway Community training in 2006. As Director of Appalshop in Whitesburg, KY, I worked directly with state and regional tourism agencies, the TourSEKY project, and Appalachian Regional Commission. I was a paid consultant for the Letcher County KY Tourism Commission (2010 -2011) securing $30,000 in funding for a public engagement process resulting in a Coal Heritage Trail and a Quilt Trail and a new county tourism brochure. Returning to Orange County in April 2012, I obtained a State historical marker, Carrboro s first, for Libba Cotten. Vice -Chair McKee took part in the Sept 2013 dedication. I became active in the Chapel Hill- Carrboro Chamber and joined Carrboro s Arts Committee and ESC. 17 Page 2 of 2 Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: Art Menius Using arts, culture, and creativity for tourism development is at the core of my life s work. Ultimately, I would like to see Orange County to develop a new body, separate from currently existing ones, that approaches arts, culture, festivals, and the creative industries (web design, architecture, metal work, app development, and etc) totally from the business and economic development perspective. Conflict of Interest: Possible perception. CH /OCCVB does not fund ArtsCenter activities. Occasionally, however, the CVB includes our events among several in its ad buys. Historic Preservation Commission (APPLICANTS SHALL RESIDE WITHIN THE TERRITORIAL Background, education and experience relevant to this board: BA and MA from UNC -CH in history 3.5 years as a public sector historian for NC Dept of Cultural Resources: Historic Sites Sections Several peer reviewed history publications Special concentration in history of the Regulators Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: I have held a deep interest in the history of Orange County since childhood and conducted original research into the Regulators for my baccalaureate honors thesis and on Scots economic activities in late colonial Orange County in grad school. I consider Orange County home and need to contribute. Conflict of Interest: Orange Unified Transportation Board Background, education and experience relevant to this board: I have extensive experience in community economic development and community based planning. In my work with Creative Carrboro, planning a proposed arts district, and with the proposed Arts and Innovation Center I have worked closely with the Carrboro Planning Dept. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: I wish to represent the planning interests on the transportation board. In Orange, Chatham, and Wilkes County, NC and Letcher County, KY, I have seen how transportation shapes and builds strong communities OR undos them. Director and Design and Production Manager 1984 Chapel Hill Carrboro City Limits Female Caucasian Community Activities /Organizational Memberships: In 2011 1 helped to found the Carrboro Bicycle Coalition (CBC), and much of my volunteer effort goes to things in the community that promote healthier transportation options, including safer biking and walking conditions, and more use of non -car forms of transportation when possible. In addition to the CBC, I have served on Carrboro s Transportation Advisory Board for several terms and a total of over 20 years. My most recent term just ended in February of 2014. 1 am the recipient of the NCPA 2011 Marvin Collins Planning Award, an award given for volunteer efforts in transportation. I hosted the state -wide NC Bike Summit last year in Carrboro, and as a member of the CBC brought the first Open Streets event to Carrboro in 2013, which was such a success that the Town made it part of their parks and recreation program in 2014. The CBC won a Diversity award from UNC in April of 2014 for its work with lower income community teaching them bike maintenance skills and giving them bike lights. Past Service on Orange County Advisory Boards: Boards /Commissions applied for: Orange Unified Transportation Board Background, education and experience relevant to this board: In addition to the work I do in the community, I work with other transportation advocates, and have a good rapport with all of them. When I served on Carrboro s Transportation Advisory Board, I attended most of the Transit Partners Meetings, so I am very familiar with the Transit system. I am a nationally certified LCI instructor with the League of American Bicyclists, and can help with classes for both children and adults to train them not only with feeling more comfortable on bikes, but to show them how to be better drivers around bikes as well. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: 19 Page 2 of 2 Heidi Perry I have 2 main reasons: I think Orange County is losing out on a lot of bicycle tourism dollars, and would like to see that explored. Oregon brings in over $400 million in bicycle tourism dollars, and the only thing they really have that we don t have is buy -in on both regional and state levels. I have ridden the Orange County rural roads for over 30 years, and am amazed at how purely beautiful they remain. My other reason is to share what I have learned from biking around this country and Canada to make cycling safer for all, and to provide more education. Conflict of Interest: Supplemental Questions: Work Experience: Design and publication of books /technical drawing of charts and maps has been my profession for the last 20+ years. I am the head of the design and production department at UNC Press, a nationally known and respected book publisher. Volunteer Experience: I have served on the Carrboro Transportation Advisory Board for a total of 20 years since 1985. 1 have also served on the Chapel Hill Bike Pedestrian Board, and the Carrboro Bicycle Coalition. I have served on the Library Services Taskforce and 2 of the previous Horace Williams Tract task forces (now called Chapel Hill North). Last year I received an award from the NC Planners Assoc. (the Marvin Collins award) for my volunteer work in this area. I have attended most of the Transit Partners meetings over the last two years. I have also served on the Smith Level Road Task Force, and have assisted with several bus, bike, and pedestrian activities. I think all of this would be an asset on this board. Education: BFA 77 UNC with a concentration in Set Design and technical Theatre, Architural Drafting degree from Durham Tech, several classes taken over the ears in subjects renging from sign language to Portugese to computer software (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, InDesign, and Dreamweaver) Other Comments: I served on this board and also on the Carrboro Library Task Force in their previous gatherings. I have been interested in transportation and how people move themselves around since I read Ivan Illich's Energy and Equity in the '70's. STAFF COMMENTS: Originally (01/24/2007) applied for Library Services Taskforce and the Orange Unified Transportation Commission. 02/23/2012 APPLIED FOR OUT BOARD. Past Service on Orange County Advisory Boards: None. Boards /Commissions applied for: Orange Unified Transportation Board Background, education and experience relevant to this board: Having served as President of a Home Owners Association and as Vice President/Treasurer of a local Farmers Market I feel that I am well qualified to work with other members of the board to formulate reasonable policies as regards the following: 1. Mass transit (light rail /bus /carpool 2. Bicycle paths /trails 3. Walking paths /trails Even though Orange County is thought of as a very progressive county there is a dearth of mass transit/walking /bicycling paths /trails. It is my firm belief that every citizen of this county should have the ability to either walk or bicycle anywhere in the county or take mass transit (light rail /bus) to any major destination in the county or between other counties (intra and inter transportation).
