Re: Recommended Appointment
Dear Chair Jacobs:
The Orange County Parks and Recreation Council (PRC) requests two new
appointments to its membership.
The Council asks that the Board appoint Ms. Teri Driscoll to position #10 for the
Hillsborough (Town) seat on the Council, replacing Denise Dickinson whose term
expired last year. Ms. Driscoll has served on a recreation board in the past in a
prior community.
The Council also asks that Mrs. Sandi Green be appointed to position #6 (Cheeks
Township) to fill a vacancy in that position. Mrs. Green is a gym owner,
kinesiologist and youth athletics coach in the area.

As a gym owner, a self - employed Kinesiologist, and an athletic coach I have come to
understand that the best leaders surround themselves with a strong team. In my current role on
the Board of our home school association, I have utilized these leadership and team - building
skills to accomplish a needed restructuring of the program and a smooth transition.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
My family has an active lifestyle and it is important to us that the parks and recreation area of
Orange County is the best it can be for us and many families like ours. We have used the
athletic fields, the trails, and the parks, as well as some of the programs. I would like to bring
new ideas to the board to improve what is already a good master plan.

I spent 18 years as a stay -at -home Mom many years ago raising my children. At that time I was
involved in three schools that my children were attending and always volunteered for the
Parent/Teacher Organizations. I was also an officer for many years, serving as Pres,. VP and
Sec. for the PTO. I was involved with the local Township Recreation Board where I lived also.
Helped organize many soccer teams and schedules for the County where I resided.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
I have lots of spare time and interestingly, I just had the opportunity to review your brochure that
has a list of all the Recreation Department activities for this upcoming fall. I thought there were
lots of good events listed there and since I have 2 grandchildren who live close by and visit me
often, I thought that maybe I could help this committee out with planning events. I also know
that there are vacancies on this committee.

elsewhere. The recent success of the Morinaga plant is a positive step, but more needs to be
done. Serving on this board would provide me with eperience with the issues surrounding
development in the county and allow me to influence it in a positive direction.

Given my experience growing up and now with young children of my own, I want to take an
active role helping to make sure limited resources are used in a manner that benefits the most
people and provides opportunities like those I had growing up. I also have an interest in disc
golf, a life long sport that I would like to see the county consider expanding to some of its
outdoor parks as feasible.

What unique perspective can you bring to the Orange County Planning Board?
I am originally from Johnston County, which reminds me of Orange county in that there is a large
rural farming area as well as urban areas. I feel having experienced the some of the changes it
went through would serve me well on the board.
What do you see as the responsibilities of this board, and what do you hope to
accomplish if appointed?
I see the board s responsibilities to assist with the development of Orange County by evaluating
plans and proposals and then advising the Board of Commissioners on the best course of
action. I hope to assist with the decisions that are made and take an active role in seeing
Orange County thrive economically.
What do you consider to be be the most important issues facing Orange County related
to growth?
I feel the most important issues currently facing the county lie with encouraging economic
development. This does not mean everything should be rubber stamped, but I feel the county
has missed out on too many opportunities in the last 5 -10 years to its detriment. The Morinaga
plant in Mebane is a positive step, but more needs to be done.
What role should the Planning Board take in guiding and regulating growth?
As a diverse collection of representatives from throughout the county, I feel the Planning Board
should have a very active role in guiding and regulating growth. However, as they are not
directly elected, merely appointed, I feel their role should remain advisory.
How would you, as a member of the Planning Board, contribute to the implementation of
the Board of Commissioners' adopted Goals and Priorities?
Well, the document linked is over 4 years old. I hope it has been updated. However, I feel working with the Town of
Hillsborough and the City of Durham on economic development districts is crucial to continued, smart growth of
Orange County.
