Cheeks Township
The Efland area of Cheeks Township is planned to receive a community park
near Efland Cheeks ..Elementary School. An adjacent property owned by the
County Board of Education (approx. 12 acres) should be investigated for use
in expanding the facilities at the school 's site. In addition to expanding
for a proposed school-park site, it would be beneficial to update any school
facilities as necessary. Proposed improvements would include items such as :
expanded play apparatus; picnic sites with associated shelters; multipurpose
play fields for soccer, open play and softball; a basketball
court/multipurpose court; tennis courts . The neighborhood center across
Hwy. 70 is an appropriate adjacent land use since the facility can be used
in conjunction with park-related events . Also, a private recreation site is
located within a short distance for use if additional facilities are needed.
The district park proposed for the Cheeks/Hillsborough area at Corporation
Lake was selected for its natural setting, possible joint use with Orange-
Alamance Water System and Duke University property, and access to
populations of Hillsborough, Cheeks, and West Eno Townships. Another aspect
considered in the site's selection was its location north of I-85. This
highway is perceived by many residents to be the boundary between north and
south Orange County. An alternate site for the park's location would be the
general area of the proposed Seven Mile Creek Reservoir. This site should
be considered for developing if acquiring property at Corporation Lake is
unattainable. The location south of I-85 would put an excessive amount of
park land in southern Orange County, promoting unequal distribution. The
development of the Corporation Lake or Seven Mile Creek Sites would
primarily be to provide access to natural areas and provide a variety of
passive uses defined previously in this report (Chapter 5, Park
Descriptions) . However, some active forms of recreation such as boating,
play areas, and court games could be sited to blend into the natural setting
and offer a variety of recreational activities .
It is also recommended that the County continue to work with the City of
Mebane in providing programs at Lake Michael in western Cheeks Township.
- Hillsborough Township
It is recommended that Fairview Community Park be maintained by the county
and additional facilities be provided during the planning period "for field
and court games, picnicking, improved access from a major road, restrooms,
r
and pedestrian circulation.
Another site, located in the center of town, is Orange County's Court House
property. The open space directly associated with the county buildings at
Court Street should be investigated as an informal plaza for passive forms
Of recreation such as picnicking, people watching, and sitting. The space
also could be used for special events . The property directly behind the
Court House, along the Eno River, not only has potential for development of
passive recreation as described above, but also active recreation such as
walking, jogging, and exercising.
Cooperation with the School Board is recommended in order to continue
Providing tennis facilities at Orange High School. Additionally, a 50-meter
