PURPOSE:
To change the name and acronym of the Orange County
Coordinated Area Transportation (C.A.T. ) program.
BACKGROUND:
The Orange County Human Services Transportation Advisory
Board, at its April 26 meeting, voted to change the name
and acronym of the Coordinated Area Transportation (C.A.T. )
program. The practical necessity for the proposed change
are: ( 1) The Raleigh Capital Area Transit (C.A.T. ) has done
extensive regional advertising (Radio, TV, newspaper) which
covers Orange County of their well established "C.A.T"
service. Orange County would like to avoid any confusion
when it begins to advertise its public transportation routes.
(2) Orange County will be putting up bus stop signs with its
acronym on it in Hillsborough and Chapel Hill/Carrboro area.
Again, as more regional interconnecting routes between
triangle cities evolve, Orange County will need its own
unique acronym and logo to inform riders.
Over the past six months name suggestions were solicited from
participating agency personnel and clients and the general
public. The NC Department of Transportation's Communication
Services Specialist was also invited to assist in choosing a
new name and acronym that would reflect the Federal Transit
Administration's increased emphasis on public ridership as
outlined in the approved Transportation Development Plan.
2
Names under consideration included the Orange County
Transportation (OCT) , Orange Transportation (0 Trans or OT) ,
and Orange County Public Transportation (OCPT) . After
considerable discussion the Transportation Advisory Board
voted at its November 1 meeting to recommend that the system
be renamed Orange Public Transportation (OPT) . This new name
and acronym would be used in promoting the new public shuttle
and those existing routes on which the general public may
ride on a seat-available basis.
RECOM4ENDATION(S) :
The Manager recommends approval of the name change and
acronym from Coordinated Area Transportation (C.A.T. ) to
Orange Public Transportation (OPT) .
