PURPOSE: To provide the Board of Commissioners with an update on
the progress of the CIS program in Orange County.
BACKGROUND: In April and July 1994, the Board of Commissioners
approved funding for the implementation of a Communities In
Schools initiative in Orange County.
Communities In Schools (CIS) is a process dedicated to
coordinating human services and delivering them to youth
attending both school systems and to their families. The purpose
of CIS is to encourage individual students to attend school
regularly, obtain the human services they need, develop academic
skills and set goals for the future that include graduation,
further education and/or successful employment.
Currently, a CIS program involving approximately 40
students is being implemented at A.L. Stanback Middle School in
Hillsborough. A comparable program, involving approximately
45-50 students is scheduled for implementation beginning
January 25, 1995 at Guy B. Phillips Middle School in Chapel
Hill.
Scott Gardner, Chair of the CIS Board of Directors and
Charlotte Jones, Executive Director, will be present to provide
an overview of the project and answer questions.
RECOMMENDATION(S) : The Manager recommends that the Board
receive this report as information.
