Ms. McLamb was my advisory board's closest representative to the manufacturing community due to her position as the HR Manager of our packing industry MeadWestvaco in Mebane. She was also the only member who was not an Orange County resident. Our Policies & Procedures guidelines provide that our advisory board's 10 members include representatives from the following sectors: core business community (including banking, construction, manufacturing, architecture, real estate, legal, development, utility management, etc.), agriculture, entrepreneurial, UNC Chapel Hill & tourism. Manufacturing is not currently represented. , I wish to strongly endorse the application of Ronald Keizer as a qualified candidate to fill this open category. Mr. Keizer owns and operates a small metalworking manufacturing facility, called USA Dutch, which is located in the County's Cedar Grove area near US 70 Business & Mount Willing Road. His family -owned firm has operated in Orange County for the past 19 years, employs 27 local residents in the skilled machine trade, and is set to make $2.7 million capital expansion in 2014 to construct a new 30,000 sq. ft. facility. Mr. Keizer is a graduate of both UNC and Duke. He brings the unique perspective of a small business owner and a manufacturer who is committed to growing here in Orange County. I ask that the BOCC review his application and consider him for appointment. Best regards, Steve Brantley Director, Orange County Economic Development ATTACHMENTS; • Ronald Keizer — application • List of Orange County Economic Development Advisory Board Members, March 2014 "Thanks for the information Steve. I will go ahead and process the application and send out the standard email to Mr. Keizer with a copy to you. Once that is complete and you have had a chance to meet with your board, please send in (and it can be via email) a resolution stating the desire of the Economic Development Advisory Board to recommend Mr Keizer to the board. This is what we will then submit to the BOCC at the April 15, 2014 meeting. in order to include this recommendation to the BOCC, l will need the information by April 1, 2014. Thanks and have a great weekend. By copy of this e-mail I am notifying Steve Brantley of your interest in serving. Although you have not yet been appointed to serve as a volunteer for this Board, your willingness to volunteer your time is very much appreciated. Your name will be kept on the interest list for this Board for two (2) years and will be considered as openings occur. Appointments are made to various boards monthly. You will be notified if appointed. If you are not initially appointed to a board for which you have applied, your application will be resubmitted automatically until such time that you are appointed, or your application expires (2 years). There is a 75% attendance requirement for all advisory board members that must be adhered to in order to maintain membership. President / Owner 1995 Cedar Grove Cedar Grove Twnsp Male Caucasian Community Activities /Organizational Memberships: Active in my industry association, the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association (FMA). Was active in the Bahama Ruritan Club for many years, including serving as secretary and as a member of the board of directors for several years. Recently resigned from the club. Past Service on Orange County Advisory Boards: None Boards /Commissions applied for: Economic Development Advisory Board (REQUIRES DISCLOSURE STATEMENT) Background, education and experience relevant to this board: Though not an Orange County resident, I have been involved with my family s manufacturing business in Efland since 1995. 1 became sole owner of USA Dutch, Inc. in 2007. USA Dutch is a company that does sheet metal fabrication and CNC machining. We employ 27, and are planning a $2.8 million expansion later this year to accomodate the growth we have experienced. I am a 1985 graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, and a 2000 graduate of Duke University s Fuqua School of Business. I would bring to the Board the perspective of a small business owner and that of a manufacturing business. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: 7 Page 2 of 2 106 MR. 51121MM I am interested in seeing Orange County succeed. Given my education and career experience, I believe I can help in the area of economic development. I believe in the power of setting goals and in working together to achieve those goals. For that reason, it would be fun to me to serve on this board. It would also be educational to serve the citizens of Orange County in this capacity, and I do enjoy learning. Finally, it would be a way of passing forward to the community the success that our company has achieved to date. Conflict of Interest: I guess I don t know. Being a business owner, I suppose any discussion about infrastructure decisions might be considered to impact my business, and I don t know if that would be a conflict of interest or not. Likewise, any discussion about education or training could impact my business, as could discussion about incentives. By the same token, I believe that my background also brings some important perspectives to the board. Is it possible to have one without the other? I would be open to any guidance you may have on this issue. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: Orange County is in the midst of managing increasing population, transportation, and public needs, all of which require additional funding through revenue enhancement, and all of which intensify pressure on prioritizing needs versus wants. I have consideral experience in public relations, business building, environmental protection and renewable resource development. Having retired with this experience in hand, I would like to provide it in an advisory capacity to my community. Conflict of Interest: 16 Page 2 of 3 Jon Arvik Economic Development Advisory Board (REQUIRES DISCLOSURE STATEMENT) Background, education and experience relevant to this board: See (1) above; in addition, my most recent positions involved the application of specific technical and business management capabilities to economic growth for private, academic, and government agencies. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: It has been made plain that the BOCC has made every effort to increase the public good without a commensurate increase in taxes. However, it is necessary that continued growth of populations and public services will require an increase in income from new tax resources such as a growing tax base of successful businesses. I have considerable experience in these areas, and would like to apply them in a productive manner. Conflict of Interest: Supplemental Questions: Orange County Planning Board (REQUIRES DISCLOSURE STATEMENT) Please list the work /volunteer experience /qualifications that would add to your expertise for this board. Volunteer: participated as pro bono technical resource in environmental issue management for State and County efforts to evaluate risk /benefit proposals, also preformed as expert witness for environmental groups opposing potential use of public lands for environmentally detrimental potential pollution practices; advised private legal and commercial entities on sound business practices in renewable resource utilization, health risks, and business startup practices. What unique perspective can you bring to the Orange County Planning Board? A combination of successful product development and commercialization of products, successful private business creation and management, successful coordination of commercial business, academic research, and government agency activities, successful public relations programs, and knowledge of the needs of government agencies for successful management of their programs. What do you see as the responsibilities of this board, and what do you hope to accomplish if appointed? Planning Board: provide complete and accurate recommendations to the BOCC in regard to preparing that body to make confident and appropriate decisions in the realm of growth opportunities for the County. The breadth and depth of my expertise and experience makes my service as an Advisory Board member unique. What do you consider to be be the most important issues facing Orange County related to growth? Maintenance of the rural atmosphere of the County while growing revenues in an economically viable and sustainable manner; providing required services to the citizens of the County as population and commercial growth continues; countering the health and environmental risks that growth presents. What role should the Planning Board take in guiding and regulating growth? This Board should be the lead avisory resource for the BOCC in their responsibility for both short- and long -term success and quality of life of the citizens of the County. How would you, as a member of the Planning Board, contribute to the implementation of the Board of Commissioners' adopted Goals and Priorities?
