RE: C&A Monitoring for Geothermal Well Trenching -Change Order Request
1. INTRODUCTION
This revised scope of work and cost estimate has been prepared by Legacy Research Associates
(Legacy)of Durham, North Carolina, for the Orange County Planning and Inspections Department in
Hillsborough, North Carolina. The proposed work is for additional archaeological fieldwork, lab work, and
reporting associated with the Geothermal Well Project(Phase II) located in the Hillsborough Historic
District.
2. DESCRIPTION OF ADDITIONAL WORK
A description of the proposed additional archaeological work focuses on five areas that have had
ground-disturbing activities associated with the Geothermal Well Project. These five areas are: Market
House/Riverwalk Park, Old Orange County Courthouse, Old Orange County jail, DA Office East Parking Lot,
and DA Office West Side Yard.
Market House/Riverwalk Park Old Orange County Courthouse. and Old Orange County Jail
Fieldwork was conducted at these three areas in November 2013. Additional work needed to
complete the investigation of these areas included: artifact processing, analysis, and curation; recording
the archaeological sites with the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), and preparing a
report on the fieldwork, artifact analysis, and historic context for the investigations.
DA Office East Parking Lot and West Side Yard
The additional archaeological investigations in the DA Office East Parking Lot and West Side Yard
areas that was conducted in January 2014 included the following elements: controlled archaeological
subsurface investigations, mapping the excavations, analyzing data, possibly recording two sites with the
North Carolina SHPO, and reporting on the fieldwork. The work documented the presence or absence of
cultural and archaeological resources and determined the significance of any cultural resources that were
affected by the geothermal well project.

3. COST
The following tabulation is a summary of the anticipated cost of the proposed additional work. The cost
estimate includes the following items:
1. equipment rental (backhoe)and operation
2. no more than 3 days of fieldwork at the DA Office East Parking Lot and West Side Yard
3. artifact analysis for 5 sites (Old Orange County Courthouse, Old Orange County Jail, Market
House/Riverwalk Park, DA Office East Parking Lot, and DA Office West Side Yard)
4. reporting the results of the investigations for all five areas (Old Orange County Courthouse, Old
Orange County Jail, Market House/Riverwalk Park, DA Office East Parking Lot, and DA Office West
Side Yard)
5. submitting archaeological site forms for the 5 sites (Old Orange County Courthouse, Old Orange
County Jail, Market House/Riverwalk Park, DA Office East Parking Lot, and DA Office West Side
Yard)
6. curating project records and artifacts at the NC Archaeology Curation Facility in Raleigh
