Purpose: To accept the grant award from the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety for Domestic
Violence Support Team.
Background: This project will expand the services that the Orange County Sheriff Department is able to
offer victims of domestic violence in Orange County. One full-time Domestic Violence
Coordinator,whose primary duties are legal advocacy and court assistance, already works in
the Sheriffs Department providing assistance to all referrals. This new award will allow
funding for a full-time Support Counsel. The domestic violence team will provide supportive
counseling, information and referral,court advocacy in both criminal and civil court, assistance
accessing community resources and follow-up services to ensure that victims of domestic
violence are not forced to return to their batterer. The team will also participate in training
law-enforcement officers regarding issues of domestic violence.
The grant award is 75%federal funds with 25%county match. Grant period December 1,
1996 through September 30, 1997.
Recommendation: The Manager recommends approval of the grant award.
