I have lived and worked in many parts of the world, including Poland, Italy, Taiwan/China, and the United Kingdom. I have a PhD in linguistics, and specialize in sociolinguistics, in particular issues of language, identity and migration. At present, I am writing a book titled Language in Immigrant America. My research deals directly with the kinds of issues tackled by the Human Relations Commission. I also teach a course titled Language in Immigrant America. This is a Service-Learning course, meaning that students must spend at least 20 hours per semester engaging in community service as part of the curriculum. In the spring 2012, my students tutored at El Centro Hispano in Durham, and at Lakewood Elementary School in Durham, which has a large immigrant population including Latinos and some Burmese children. The issue of the Burmese children s integration was particularly difficult as they do not have as large of a network or community. Another group of students worked directly with a newly arrived family of Burmese refugees, helping them with practical issues relating to adjusting. One student has continued to volunteer with the family on her own after the course was over. Having been involved in these issues in Durham County through my employment, I would like to contribute here in Orange County, where I reside, as well.
