Human Relations Commission
I am an immigrant and naturalized citizen. I have lived and worked in many
parts of the world, including Poland, Italy, Taiwan/China, and the United
Kingdom.
I have a PhD in linguistics, and specialize in sociolinguistics, in particular
issues of language, identity and migration. At present, I am writing a book
titled Language in Immigrant America. My research deals directly with the
kinds of issues tackled by the Human Relations Commission.
I also teach a course titled Language in Immigrant America. This is a
Service-Learning course, meaning that students must spend at least 20
hours per semester engaging in community service as part of the
curriculum. In the spring 2012, my students tutored at El Centro Hispano in
Durham, and at Lakewood Elementary School in Durham, which has a large
immigrant population including Latinos and some Burmese children. The
issue of the Burmese children s integration was particularly difficult as they
do not have as large of a network or community. Another group of students
worked directly with a newly arrived family of Burmese refugees, helping
them with practical issues relating to adjusting. One student has continued
to volunteer with the family on her own after the course was over. Having
been involved in these issues in Durham County through my employment, I
would like to contribute here in Orange County, where I reside, as well.

feel like from the experience that I have gained as a college student over the past two
years and the diverse communitys I have been able to serve I would be a great choice to
be a part of the Human Relations Commission. I would like to further serve many diverse
communitys after college and this would give me the chance to do so. I also would like to
serve the community in which I live in and give back to it all the many lessons and

Human Relations Commission
Interested in the experiences of people with varying cultural backgrounds
from a young age, I have a particular sensitivity and awareness of how
systemic habits can marginilize those who are vulnerable. I studied Political
Science, US History and completed a semester Urban Studies program in
Chicago that gave the opportunity to meet with different constituents and
hear their unique concerns. I went on to complete a Masters in African
American History at the University of Illinois-Chicago. I have also worked
with ethnically and economically diverse populations as an employee in
Planned Parenthood clinics, a public librarian, and now as a Human
Services Specialist with DSS. I am particularly interested in protecting the
most vulnerable in our communities and creating service environments that
welcome those who may have intersecting identities such as gender
variance and poverty, or disability and ethnic minority status. How can we
create spaces that make all feel seen, heard, valued? I can bring my
passion, energy, compassion, and communication skills.
Affordable Housing Advisory Board
I work at DSS and see the pressing need for safe shelter options for our
community s most vulnerable and disenfranchised. During a semester
Urban Studies program in Chicago I interned at a community organization
that brought the city s leaders together with other stakeholders to shape
neighborhood development in a way that included everyone--mixed use,
SROs, affordable housing.
Community Activities/Organizational Memberships:
