PURPOSE: To consider removing from active service a dog used by the Sheriffs
Department for drug detection; and to authorize transfer of ownership to the handler.
BACKGROUND: The dog, Arrus, born in 1988, was placed in service by the Orange
County Sheriff's Department upon the hiring of his handler from the Town of
Hillsborough in 1993. The dog has been used successfully in a number of large drug
finds, however, during the evaluation and remedial training each dog goes through
annually, the trainer recommended that, due to his age, the dog be retired. The dog's
handler, George Snowden, has requested that the dog be turned over to he and his
family.
The Sheriffs Department is presently pursuing the acquisition of another dog to be
trained and used for drug detection. Proceeds from drug busts will be used to pay for
the new animal.
RECOMMENDATION: The Manager recommends that the dog, Arrus, be removed
from active service and ownership transferred to Deputy George Snowden and his
family.
