PURPOSE: To proclaim May 12- 18, 1996 National Historic Preservation Week.
BACKGROUND: This year, National Historic Preservation Week will be observed May 12- 18. The
theme chosen by the National Trust for Historic Preservation is "Preserve Community".
A copy of the proclamation is attached.
To publicize Historic Preservation Week, The News of Orange County is publishing
captioned photographs of historic sites from the County's historic architectural inventory.
These will appear in each weekly issue throughout the month of May.
In addition, the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission will incorporate the
"Preserve Community" theme into publicity notices for the recently-adopted Historic
Preservation Element of the Comprehensive Plan. This document was developed with
considerable support from the community at large, and goals and objectives of the
Preservation Plan incorporate many of the suggestions and recommendations that were
obtained during community meetings held by the Commission last year. It is anticipated
that copies of this document will be ready for sale to the general public during the month
of May.
RECORDATION: The Administration recommends approval of the proclamation for National Historic
Preservation Week 1996.

OF
THE ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION WEEK
WHEREAS, historic preservation is an effective tool for managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering
local pride and maintaining community character while enhancing livability; and
WHEREAS, historic preservation is relevant for communities across the nation, both urban and rural, and for
Americans of all ages, all walks of life and all ethnic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, it is important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by dedicated
individuals in helping to preserve the tangible aspects of the heritage that has shaped us as a people; and
WHEREAS, Orange County is committed to preserving its historic architectural and archeological resources for its
citizens and future generations; and
WHEREAS, "Preserve Community" is the theme for National Historic Preservation Week 1996, consponsored by
the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission and the National Trust for Historic Preservation:
NOW, THEREFORE, the Orange County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim
May 12-18, 1996, as National Historic Preservation Week
in celebration of the cultural heritage of Orange County and hereby urges all citizens to support
historic preservation efforts.
